NEWS & NOTES
The Week of the Young Child
Last week (April 10-16) was the National Association for the Education of Young Children's Week of the Young Child. Each year, it is a week dedicated to bringing attention to the ongoing need for high-quality early childhood education in order to prepare young children for future success. NAEYC is a recognized leader in the field of early childhood education and together with their affiliates, they are celebrating 50 years since their very first Week of the Young Child.

WMS has always been a strong supporter of early childhood education. Dr. Montessori's methods were first developed in her work with young children. She demonstrated that high-quality education combined with a deep respect for children’s development and the natural unfolding of their personality and interests was the key to learning and success. Current research supports her findings, and it is now well-known that children benefit when their teachers individualize their instruction, scaffold their learning, provide rich learning opportunities, and let them learn by doing, which in early childhood settings is better known as play.

Dr. Montessori's work evolved to encompass the education of children of all ages, from infants through adolescents. At WMS, we see in our oldest students the strong foundations that were built in their formative years, thanks to engaging and thoughtfully prepared early learning experiences at school and at home.

As you reflect on the past, present and future of your child’s schooling, keep in mind Montessori’s quote: “The child is both a hope and a promise for mankind.” Investing time and resources into early childhood education may be the key to success for individual children but it is also necessary for the success of educational systems and society as a whole.

Please join us in thanking Delaware’s NAEYC affiliate, the Delaware Association for the Education of Young Children (DeAEYC), and their members for advocating on behalf of young children in our state.
Early Childhood Event: Virtual Family Math Night
Thursday, April 22, 6:30 p.m.

Virtual Math Night is back by popular demand! Toddler and Primary families are invited to join us on Thursday, April 22 at 6:30 p.m. for an evening of math fun. This month, we will be learning about geometry. Trish Harkins will be sharing a book from the author and artist, Hervé Tullet, and Paula Sharpe will host another math-related scavenger hunt. The kids will be entertained and tired before bed, and we will share more resources for parents.  Sign up using the registration link below and you will be sent the Zoom link before the event!

Seeking Flower Pots & Planters for Classroom Gardening Projects

As you probably know, many of our classes have begun sprouting seeds and preparing spaces for planting. If you have pots or planters you no longer intend to use, we would love to take them off your hands. They can be given to a staff member in the morning at drop off.

Thank you!
Bloomz Updates

Yesterday, we learned that a bug in the iOS version of the Bloomz app was preventing some families from logging into Bloomz and clicking on notifications. A new update was added to the app store last night, which should resolve these issues. Please be sure to install the latest version.

We apologize for any inconvenience this caused, and thank you for alerting us to this issue!
Annual Meeting - May 4

All WMS families should have received an invitation and ballot to vote for this year's board nominees via email yesterday. Please contact Noel Dietrich if you did not receive this message.

Take the Great Schools, Clean Streams Pledge

This year, WMS is participating in New Castle County's annual Great Schools, Clean Streams pledge drive to help prevent water pollution. Schools throughout the county are competing to collect online pledges to dispose of used cooking oil and grease in the trash rather than pouring them down the sink. The schools that collect the most pledges in their category will win up to $1,250 for school supplies and educational projects. The pledge drive runs through April 30.

Your pledge will help prevent water pollution and could help WMS win a cash prize! Tell friends and family to pledge as well!
Required COVID-19 Testing: Next Results Due on Wednesday, April 28

We continue to be grateful for your efforts to keep our community safe through COVID-19 testing every two weeks.

Your child's next test results are due on Wednesday, April 28 at 4 p.m. in order for your child to attend school on Thursday, April 29. Results must be emailed to Nurse Kathy at [email protected] as soon as they become available. If you are sending a screenshot, please include the date tested.

Important: Please understand that if no results are forwarded to Nurse Kathy, your child will not be permitted on campus. If your results are forwarded after 4 p.m. on the due date, you may experience a delay in drop-off in the morning. A last-minute result may delay or prevent your child from attending school; time must be allowed for communication to the staff members conducting screenings in the car line.

Upcoming required due dates are as follows:

  • Wednesday, April 28
  • Wednesday, May 12

You are still welcome to have your child tested more frequently and may forward the results to Nurse Kathy.

Thank you, and please contact Nurse Kathy if you have any questions!
