A MESSAGE FROM

Lower School Division Director

Mr. Nathan J. Mylin

Greetings Lower School Families!

Welcome to the 2022-2023 Lower School Director Monthly e-Newsletter! This communication will come out on the third Friday of every month – with the exception of December – throughout the academic year, and will include information on upcoming events and happenings for CSS’s Lower School students and families.

Experiential Education at its Finest

Near the beginning of each school year, while the weather is predictably warmer, CSS’s PreK-5th grade students experience what is fondly known as Fall Adventure. I specifically chose CSS as my school of choice because of its long history with experiential education. After attending the 2nd, 4th, and 5th grade Fall Adventures, I am more confident than ever that I’ve made the right decision. The social and emotional skills students acquire through these extended day and overnight experiences are invaluable, and – as we discussed at the 4th and 5th grade’s evening campfires – may be some of the most important skills they learn in life.

Through first-hand experiences, I have seen the huge benefits for children who have the opportunity and privilege to receive an engaging, hands-on educational journey like that provided at CSS. Such an education is a true gift. Now that I am at the other end of raising my four children, I can without a doubt vouch for the importance of children being challenged, engaged, and truly loving their school.

If you would like to learn more about the CSS experiential education philosophy, please join us for CSS’s 2nd Annual ExEd Expo on Saturday, October 15, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the Quad. Your family can pan for gold, harness up and climb a 24-foot rock wall, visit the CSS garden booth, meet Master Falconer and former CSS teacher Roger Tucker’s birds of prey, and more. You don’t want to miss this one; spread the word and bring a friend!

Welcome to Our New Fourth Grade Teacher Mrs. Arifa Kaderbhai

Please welcome our new 4th Grade Teacher Mrs. Arifa Kaderbhai, who will be team-teaching with current 4th Grade Lead Teacher Mrs. Amy Toussaint. Mrs. Kaderbhai holds a master’s degree in education with a concentration in special education for grades K-6. Also a CSS parent with daughters in the 4th and 6th grades at CSS, Mrs. Kaderbhai loves to hike and spend time with her family, and enjoys teaching math and all subjects.

Welcome to the Lower School team, Mrs. Kaderbhai!

Picture Day Retakes

9 a.m.-12 p.m. | Trianon

Students will be receiving a proof sheet, or photos if you have pre-ordered, from LifeTouch in the very near future. These will be distributed by classroom teachers, and your family will be notified once students receive them. Students who missed picture day, or whose families would prefer their student’s photo be retaken, will have the opportunity to do so on the morning of Thursday, October 6. If your student is having their photo retaken despite previously purchasing a photo package, please let your classroom teacher know and have your student bring the package to school to return to the photographer on retake day.

Revue

6-8 p.m. | LPAC

Each year, CSS hosts Revue wherein students work together or solo to perform before fellow peers and families. Similar to a talent show, this year's Revue theme, in honor of CSS’s 60th Anniversary, is the ’60s! Our Lower School Dramatics Teacher Ms. Rachel Pratt will be providing 4th and 5th grade students an opportunity to do a class performance. This performance is optional, and 4th and 5th grade students will be sent home with a permission slip to be signed by a parent/guardian. Be on the lookout for posters and fliers, which will start popping up soon!

Halloween Parade

Quad

On Friday, October 28, students will have the opportunity to bring or wear a Halloween costume to school and participate in an end-of-day class party!

PreK will parade around the Children’s Academic Center (CAC) building at 8:30 a.m. Meanwhile, students grades K-5 will parade around the Quad at 2:45 p.m. that same day.

Classroom teachers will be sharing some costume guidelines about what is acceptable, and we look forward to this fun traditional CSS event!

VIEW ALL-SCHOOL CALENDAR

Carnival TODAY

A reminder to all families. School will be dismissed at noon today, September 23, for Carnival. Buses will depart at 12:15 p.m. and there will be no 3:30 p.m. buses nor after school extended care today. We hope you will join us out on the Quad for this fun-filled, community-centered event. A BBQ lunch will be served al fresco at Carnival, which is a cash only event, so please be sure to bring funds for lunch, games, and concessions. Thank you for supporting our Parents Association and, in turn, supporting our school.

Morning Drop-Off

To accommodate the overall growth of our division and delays due to road construction, Lower School morning drop-off has been shifted backward five minutes and will begin at 7:45 a.m. Classes begin promptly at 8 a.m. and tardiness will be recorded for those students who arrive to class at 8:05 a.m. or later. Please allow time for your child to organize themselves, read the morning board, and be ready to start school at 8 a.m. Thank you for your assistance in teaching our students the important life skill of being on time.

LOWER SCHOOL VOICES

Fifth graders Nick O. and Vaishnavi E. commented about their Fall Adventure at Chatfield State Park.

Nick: It was fun and great to be with friends. I liked the rock-climbing and the fishing. The wind on the second night was a little scary, but all the tents stayed up for those who put in their stakes correctly.

Vaishnavi: I liked the rock-climbing and swimming in the lake. The food was really good, too! Two nights was just enough. Even though I missed my dad, the activities kept me busy and kept me from getting homesick. I learned that our tent can withstand a windstorm!

Second graders Tom M. and Berkeley G. commented about their Fall Adventure at Homestead Ranch Park.

Tom: The fishing activity was my favorite, and I caught a fish! I learned that I have a lot of energy at night. Our school should keep doing this because kids really like it and it is really cool!

Berkeley: My favorite activity was making and painting a cloth fish that blows in the wind and watching the colors fade and merge together. I learned that I sleep better in a sleeping bag than in a bed. I liked doing Fall Adventure close to home. It was nice to know that my parents could come and get me at anytime if I needed them.
