A Message from Superintendent Selesnick

Dear KLSD Community,

We’ve had a very positive start to this school year. We are thrilled to see the smiling faces of all our students and colleagues back in-person in our buildings. And we are excited to present a comprehensive Capital Improvement Proposal to our community this fall. Please read more below about the details of this project and visit our website for even more information. I hope many of you will be able to join us this weekend for Homecoming games and celebrations at John Jay. To all who are celebrating Rosh Hashanah, I wish you a sweet New Year. And to all, I hope it is a restful and joyful long weekend.

Sincerely,

Andrew Selesnick

Superintendent

All-School Reads Bring Elementary Students Together

Participating in the Community Read

“That looks just like us!” said one of the students in Ann Marie Friscia’s third-grade class, pointing to a page in the book she was reading aloud. The illustration in “This Is a School” by John Schu showed a group of children sitting on a classroom carpet while their teacher read a book to them. “Yes, that’s right,” said Friscia again and again as her students found themselves mirrored in the book. All three of Katonah-Lewisboro elementary schools have an all-school read planned for each month; this one is the September read at Meadow Pond Elementary. MORE

Folding Team-Building Fun into First Days of School

picking sunflowers, creating friendships

Teachers have been weaving relationship-building activities through the first two weeks of John Jay Middle School--purposeful gatherings ranging from classes creating sunflower bouquets together in the school garden to students playing team-building games on Putnam Northern Westchester BOCES Challenge Course. As teacher David Ley puts it, their goal is to "create a sense of small." MORE

It's All Talk in World Languages

Spanish class

Walk through the World Languages hallway at John Jay High School, and you might hear students speaking in Spanish about Elvis and Henry Kissinger, chatting in French about their goals for the future and their views of the world, or considering the Latin phrase fortes fortuna iuvat--fortune favors the bold. “It feels like school again,” said World Language teacher Matthew Knittel. MORE

K-L Community’s Excitement for Capital Improvements Project

Supporting student learning is the driving force behind Katonah-Lewisboro Schools’ Capital Improvement Proposal, which goes to community vote on October 18, 2022. We asked all five of our school principals which aspects they are looking forward to and heard phrases including "much-needed," “support research-based instructional approaches" and "catapult into a 21st century facility."
