A RECONCILING IN CHRIST SYNOD

First Call Theological Education is our program for new pastors and deacons
Pastors and deacons serving in their first calls in the Rocky Mountain Synod gathered Sep. 22-24 for First Call Theological Education (FCTE) in Park City, Utah. Together, they engaged in worship, fellowship, learning, and conversation around Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
Much gratitude for the leaders who gathered, Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church in Park City, who hosted, and Pastor Barbara Berry-Bailey, Special Assistant for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, who facilitated the event!
FCTE is a three-year structured program of education and encouragement designed to assist newly called leaders in the transition to rostered ministry. The ELCA has defined goals for this continuing theological education during the first three years of rostered service under call. Pastor Diana Linden-Johnson serves as the assistant to the bishop in the RMS who creates and facilitates our program, sometimes done in conjunction with other Region 2 synods.

FROM VICKY DAUB, VSCP EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
" We Are All Here"

“Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.” Recently, I read these words from Acts 16:28 as part of the reading during worship for the 7th Sunday of Easter. I kept re-reading them as I practiced. In my role as the Executive Director of the Veteran Servant Corps Project (VSCP), I have been thinking about the phrase “we are all here”, especially in terms of the 18+ Veterans who complete suicide daily in our nation. Raising awareness about this issue is one our VSCP tenets. Are you and your congregation interested in joining in conversation around this important issue? Contact me, Vicky Daub, at Director@veteranservantcorps.org.
Are you interested in being part of our “We Are All Here” initiative by donating? Click here then select the General Fund Gift option, enter "Veteran Servant Corps Project" in the note/memo line. If you prefer to mail a donation, send it to the Rocky Mountain Synod, 7375 Samuel Drive, Denver, CO 80221, adding Veteran Servant Corps Project to the note portion of your check.

The Rise of Christian Nationalism
Wednesday, Nov. 2, 6:30pm
An Interview with Katherine Stewart, author of The Power Worshippers

For too long the Religious Right has masqueraded as a social movement preoccupied with a number of cultural issues, such as abortion and same-sex marriage. But in her deeply reported investigation, Katherine Stewart reveals a disturbing truth: America’s Religious Right has evolved into a Christian nationalist movement. It seeks to gain political power and to impose its vision on all of society. It isn’t fighting a culture war, it is waging a political war on the norms and institutions of American democracy.
Stewart shows that the real power of the movement lies in a dense network of think tanks, advocacy groups, and pastoral organizations, embedded in a rapidly expanding community of international alliances with likeminded, anti-democratic religious nationalists around the world, including Russia. She follows the money behind the movement and traces much of it to a group of super-wealthy, ultraconservative donors and family foundations. The Christian nationalist movement is far more organized and better funded than most people realize. It seeks to control all aspects of government and society. Its successes have been stunning, and its influence now extends to every aspect of American life, from the White House to state capitols, from our schools to our hospitals.

Katherine Stewart, the author of The Power Worshipers, will be interviewed by Rabbi Daniel Bogard and Pastor Dohle to probe into what this rise means for Christians and non-Christians alike.

The Social Concerns Forum at Bethany Lutheran Church in Denver, is sponsoring a program on understanding and dealing effectively with racism. Join us in Bethany's Great Hall for a morning of focused learning, coffee, food and dialogue. We will use small group and large group conversations to deepen our understanding about the surrounding racism, and how it impacts all of us people of faith.Although all are welcome, the initial program is primarily designed for white people who are seeking to understand race more deeply, and who are wanting to understand to understand their role in this conversation. We are aware that sometimes what white people honestly and openly share, can nevertheless be inadvertently wounding , and hard on people of color. Debbie's approach is very gracious, courteous yet non-threatening. Please know that this is a personal, spiritual, informational and non-partisan approach to deepen our understanding about the issues surrounding racism, and how it impacts all of us as people of faith.

"The Saint Paul Area Synod is made up of congregations, mission starts and institutions committed to growing in faith and trust in Jesus Christ. Living out of our identity as Lutherans, we recognize we are grasped by grace and are free to devote our energy to being church in a way that is rooted in tradition and open to experimentation.
This means we will show up where we have not been before. We will walk with those who have felt excluded, hurt or indifferent to the witness of the church. We will act with the confidence that God calls us to meet Christ in every one of our neighbors. Read more>
Led by Bishop Patricia Lull, our synod is made up of 110 congregations and new mission starts. In our work, the Saint Paul Area Synod works to build mutually transformative partnerships, embolden public witness for justice, and renew ourselves in the possibilities of being church in a new day."
