Antigua and Barbuda Yachting Industry Gears Up for International Arrivals
The docks are well-booked and marine service businesses, restaurants, stores and yacht services are gearing up to receive an influx of boats who have already set sail for the Caribbean.

The marinas are all implementing protocols to control access to the docks. Wearing of masks, sanitization and social distancing are all key along with temperature testing prior to being given access to the docks. Restaurants similarly have re-laid their floors to ensure that guests can enjoy a socially distanced enjoyable dining experience.

There are plans afoot to execute all of the yachting events on the calendar including the Budget Marine Hightide Series, the Nelsons Pursuit Race, the Superyacht Challenge Antigua, RORC Caribbean 600, Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta, Antigua Sailing Week and other fun one day races.

Also on the agenda are virtual yacht visits on one of the 20+ yachts (see below for a list of exhibiting yachts) already on the show’s directory and over 60 exhibitors who have chosen to host their own custom online stand. Miami Yacht Show is Postponed for 2021
The cancellation of the upcoming Miami International Boat Show is having ripple effects. The organizers of the big-boat Miami Yacht Show, plus its companion event SuperYacht Miami, have hit the pause button. Rather than an outright cancellation, though, the Miami Yacht is postponed, at least for now.

Originally set for February 11 to 15, the event was to be the 33rd annual edition. For much of its existence, it went by the name Yacht & Brokerage Show, for instance. Additionally, it long occupied the Indian Creek Waterway adjacent to the famous Collins Avenue in Miami Beach. For 2018, co-owners Informa, a trade-show specialist, and the International Yacht Brokers Association (IYBA) rechristened it the Miami Yacht Show. That same year, the event moved it downtown Miami, at One Herald Plaza.

Looking For Your Ultimate Yacht?
While sectors such hospitality, aviation, tourism and automotive, have taken a severe pounding in 2020, others have managed to survive - perhaps even thrive. One such sector is yachting. Anecdotally, a number of yacht brokers have told me that they’ve achieved very good sales this season. Conversely, charter businesses and private charter yachts have had a stinker, but that’s a different story.

So why are new yachts seemingly flying off the shelves? Boating captures the mood of social-distancing and escapism rather nicely. After all, you can’t get much further from the madding crowd than in the middle of the ocean. Also, while air traffic remains restricted, sea traffic does not - it’s a ‘staycation’, without too much ‘staying’ in the same spot. Another squirt of market stimulation has been some keen discounting - even high-net-worth individuals will be swayed by a deal.
