Even while the AMEDD Museum remains closed to the public due to the COVID-19 outbreak, there is plenty of maintenance, cleaning, and upgrade work going on at the Museum to make it an even better training facility and offer an improved visitor experience when it reopens. Under the oversight of George C. Wunderlich, the Director of the U.S. Army Medical Department Museum and his staff, Joint Base San Antonio and civilian contractors are accomplishing overdue maintenance and repairs.
Making the Most of Quarantine
Inside the main building, the Museum is getting all new electronic HVAC controls during a project that will continue for the next two weeks. Properly functioning HVAC is critical to maintaining the correct humidity and temperature needed to protect the valuable artifacts in the Museum collections.
And the sidewalk leading to the Combat Medic Memorial statue, one of the most photographed spots on Fort Sam Houston, has been repaired to avoid a serious tripping hazard.
Lighting Enhancements
The security lights over all outdoor exits have been upgraded to LED to enhance lighting and save energy costs. Path lights and gazebo lights have been restored. These lights have not worked in at least 2 and half years!
Exhibit Enhancements
New Introduction panels, panel mounts and lighting are being installed throughout the galleries. These panels will introduce each gallery to visitors as they enter a new area. Photographed here is our test of the new mounts and panel printing.
George and his staff are making their own improvements within the galleries as well. The Model T has been upgraded with an authenticate and period correct red light on the patient bay lit by LED. Note the WWI Gas Patient inside awaiting transport to the Aid Station.
