At the time of the COVID-19 stay at home order we were in the beginning stages of appointing and organizing the Nominating Committee. The Executive Committee made the decision to put nominations on hold as we didn’t feel it appropriate to ask anyone to consider a board roll when change was ever constant and members were fighting for their business and personal safety. Thankfully, the three directors who were due to complete their terms in April, agreed to extend their position in the interim. Now that the economy has reopened and restrictions are beginning to relax we are ready to move forward in the relentless pursuit of a vibrant and prosperous business community thru new board leadership.

Executive Committee
The Board of Directors met in person (while social distancing) for the June 23 Board Meeting. During this meeting, the Board elected new officers. I am pleased to present to you the new Kearney Chamber Executive Committee:
  • President: Gerri Spencer
  • Vice-President: Brian Watts
  • Treasurer: Jason Hoyt
Jennifer Grossl will continue on the board as Immediate Past President. We are grateful to our outgoing officers Jennifer Grossl and Bree Switzer . The leadership these two ladies demonstrated was exemplary and set the tone for the future of the chamber.

Terms Ending
Three amazing Kearney Chamber Board Members are finishing up their terms at the end of the July: B ree Switzer, Shawn Barber, and Sheri Gillespie . We are grateful for all they brought to the board table; their dedicated leadership and service will be deeply missed. Although they are leaving the board they don't get off that easy, we will definitely be tapping into their knowledge and skills moving forward.

Board Elections
It is our hope and plan to make Wednesday, August 5th our next full Membership Luncheon (watch for location details). We are making plans for a safe and socially distant event. Our guest speaker, Dr. Matthew Miller , Incoming KSD Superintendent, will share his entry plan as-well-as insights on the pandemic.  At this meeting, per our by-laws, the Nominating Committee will present a slate of nominees for Directors to the general membership for vote. We have three seats open and three candidates the Nominating Committee is presenting for election. This slate of candidates includes: Adam Mustoe ( First United Methodist Church) , Heather Billings ( 9Round Kearney) , and Jewelee Cox ( Tobacco Barn Farm) . Additional nominations for Director positions may be made from the floor at the August meeting by any member in good standing.

Nominating Committee
Each year the Board President appoints a committee of at least three people, known as the Nominating Committee, to present a slate of nominees for Directors to the general membership. the Nominating Committee is comprised of one person from each standing committee, who is not a Board member. This years committee members were Debbie Holt (Marketing Committee), Pam Crow (Finance Committee), Shaney Othic (Nonprofit Forum), and Tina Rankin (Ambassador Committee). We are grateful for the extra time and effort these individuals gave to find champions for the chamber, and for their quick and efficient work.

Do you have a creative flair, love for flowers and a compassion to share making memories with awesome customers?
One of Kearney's longest standing businesses is looking for someone to carry on the tradition of providing our community with floral service for any occasion. The shop opened in 1976 and was sold to the second owners in 1996. It still calls home, the original location in downtown Kearney. The current owners of 26 years are planning to retire in the fall of 2020. The support of the Kearney community and surrounding area has made this tradition the success that it is.
