You have completed Visual Phonics* training, now what? Take it to the next level by pairing Visual Phonics with Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. RMTC-D/HH is pleased to announce training in this evidence-based supplementary intervention for professionals currently working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing in the state of Florida. Please join us for this opportunity to earn up to ten recommended hours of in-service points for participation in this live, online professional development. This flipped professional development training will give you all the tools you need to start implementing the intervention in the classroom the next day. Participants will have a week to review materials before meeting with the instructor to practice the objectives. Then the participants will be ready to implement the skill the following Monday and study the next week's materials. Participants should also plan for up to four hours of follow up work that includes benchmark assessments, progress monitoring assessments, and recording lesson implementation for feedback from a coach. RMTC-D/HH will provide participants with the book Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons and ongoing coaching for effective implementation and progress monitoring data collection.
Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons is a complete, step-by-step program that shows teachers how to simply and clearly teach their students to read using the DISTAR method. Twenty minutes a day is the standard for implementation, and within 100 teaching days, the research suggests students will be decoding on at least a 2nd grade reading level. This program is a scripted, easy-to-follow, and enjoyable way to help students to gain the essential skills of reading.
The University of North Florida conducted research using this program in conjunction with Visual Phonics while teaching students who are D/HH in an auditory-oral program. Results from this research are encouraging. For example, in a single case study, a student who was D/HH was able to increase his ability to decode nonsense words from 1 to 9 words in 8 weeks. In a second study, six students who were D/HH all showed an increase in the ability to read nonsense words at varying levels with only 10 weeks of intervention.

Upon completion of this training using the Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons paired with Visual Phonics intervention, participants will be able to:
RMTC-D/HH will be “flipping” this professional development. A “flipped'' professional development means that the participants will be required to view pre-recorded videos first, and then come ready for hands-on practice with immediate corrective feedback. RMTC-D/HH will provide links for you to watch the pre-recorded videos before meeting on the subsequent Friday practice days. We all learn new instructional practices at different speeds and with different supports. By pre-recording the lectures for professional development, you can learn the information in the manner that suits you best.
Participants will collect 8 weeks of word reading fluency (WRF) data. In order to earn the certificate, participants must complete 8 weeks of data collection and enter it in the FDLRS Impact Database (FID).
I understand, if I wish to earn in-service credits towards the renewal of a Florida Educator’s Certificate, it is recommended that I contact my school district’s professional development office BEFORE beginning a course to verify the requirements I must fulfill. RMTC-D/HH will provide a certificate upon completion of the course and submission of any follow-up activity requirements in the FDLRS Impact Database. The suggested inservice points for this training is 10 points. RMTC-D/HH does NOT provide CEUs.
RMTC-D/HH is a discretionary project funded by the State of Florida, Department of Education, Bureau of Exceptional Student Education through federal assistance under IDEA Part B and through a cooperative agreement with the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind.
Activities and resources provided by RMTC-D/HH are available to professional staff who are currently working with students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing in the State of Florida.
