SERVING ASHEVILLE CITY SCHOOLS SINCE 1988

Boomers, Gen X, Millennials or Gen Z? ACSF board and staff Tik Tok battle

Our end of year board meeting was the first in-person meeting we've had in 16 months! While getting a chance to see each other in person on the AHS cafeteria patio, members were also led in a dance by students from the IRL TikTok club. Watch the video and you can decide who were the best dancers! Additional thanks to board member, Dr. Mark Dickerson for serving up some tunes as our DJ!

During our meeting, we celebrated 8 amazing individuals as they came to the end of their service on the ACSF board. We are grateful to Shavonne Darity, Elinor Earle, Cindy McMillan, Kate Shem, Nikita Smart, Rebecca Strimer, Kate Buys, and Seth Bellamy for their years of service in support of the Asheville City Schools Foundation. Thank you!!!!
Congratulations to the 2021 scholarship recipients!!

The Asheville City Schools Foundation was honored to award over $212,000 in college scholarships to 36 outstanding young leaders this spring. We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the 2021 scholarship committee for their time and service this year.

Honoring our ACS heroes
Teacher Appreciation Week? Try Teacher Appreciation Month! ACSF celebrated the incredible dedication of our teachers and staff in May by sponsoring a wellness retreat, supporting teacher gifts at the high schools, hosting a district-wide raffle with incredible local prizes, and our annual Celebration event at Salvage Station. Thank you ACS teachers and staff for going above and beyond!
ACS families LOVE our teachers!

We had over 350 entries to our teacher nomination raffle by students, parents, community members, and fellow staff. Congratulations to the following raffle winners:
These teachers won raffle gifts that included movie tickets, restaurant gift certificates, gardening items, chocolates, coffee, Biltmore gardens tickets, Asheville Bee Charmer items, and even a 2 night stay at the Omni Grove Park Inn. Thank you to the following businesses for their donation to the raffle in support of ACS teachers!

It was a beautiful day to show appreciation to ACS teachers & staff at our Celebration event! With representation from all our schools, it was a great turnout and fun occasion to kick back and enjoy the afternoon! *Special thanks to Salvage Station and Poppy Popcorn for their support.
Racial Equity Ambassadors
Congratulations Racial Equity Ambassadors for your delivery of the Asheville 6 - six strategies for creating culturally competent classrooms. The Ambassadors completed sessions with the entire AHS and SILSA faculties from November through May. One veteran teacher deemed the sessions as, “The best professional development that I have experienced in years.”

Members of the REAP team will be applying their strategies in the AMS Successful Summer program and presenting to staff from Dogwood Health Trust this month. They will be back in action on their campus and throughout ACS this fall. Thank you Ambassadors for working hard to create a more inclusive campus and a better world!
Thanks to Whole Foods for their support of these students!

Spring to Summer IRL After School
Celebrating another successful IRL session and gearing up for Summer IRL pop ups

With the support of United Way and WNC Bridge Foundation, IRL will also be supporting ACS summer programming with fun learning opportunities for middle schoolers. A team of our Racial Equity Ambassadors will be paid IRL interns and our TAPAS artists will be providing summer residencies!
This year to celebrate IRL After-school's 10 year anniversary, IRL students created a podcast that was submitted to NPR's National Student Podcast Challenge. They reflected on their experiences in IRL and how IRL has impacted our community over the years. Click here to listen!
