Principal's Letter

Hello Grant Community,

November is Native American Heritage Month! This special month was first titled National American Indian Heritage Month in a joint proclamation by George HW Bush in 1990, looking to recognize the contributions of First Nations peoples to the history of The United States of America. There are currently 574 federally recognized tribes in the US, with 29 whose ancestral homelands reside in what is currently Washington State. At Grant, we have an awesome group of families, students and even some staff that have Native American ancestry!

A few years back, I was introduced to Native Land Digital (www.native-land.ca), a powerful online tool that can help interested parties determine which tribes had ancestral homelands at any location across the globe. Using the tool, you can enter your own home address, or any location of interest. I used the tool and input the address of Grant Elementary School. As I expected, I found Grant Elementary falls in the range of both the Spokane and Coeur d’Alene tribes that historically inhabited this area. Once an address is entered, the map zooms in much like Google Earth. As you explore the site, you can find links to territories, languages, and treaties areas along with links to the specific tribes that inhabited the area before colonists arrived. You can also find hyperlinks for websites to both The Spokane (https://spokanetribe.com/) and Coeur d’Alene (https:// www.cdatribe-nsn.gov/) tribes. Consider trying it out as a family!

Learning is Fun!

Mrs. Evola's class enjoyed having Gonzaga University's Science in Action team visit and teach them about beaver dams.

Mrs. Mata's class had fun learning with a pumpkin themed day. It was filled with pumpkin sensory bags, pumpkin academic stations and a pumpkin science experiment!

Mrs. Cornmesser's class loved having 5th grade buddy, Samaya, read to them!

Mrs. Kestell's class had a great time reading during our school wide DEAR Time, where every student and staff member was to Drop Everything And Read!

Warm Winter Clothing Drive

Ms. Lipsker and Ms. Schoenfeld have collaborated with neighborhood businesses to help our families keep their students warm this winter. We are looking for gently used coats, hats, gloves, pants, socks and boots. Drop off boxes are located at Perry Street Brewing, South Perry Pizza, South Perry Lantern, and Wishing Tree Books.

If your family is in need of winter clothes, please contact Ms. Campbell, our school counselor.

Counselor's Corner

Hello Grant families,

I hope you are all staying safe and warm as we quickly transition to the colder weather. Several of our amazing teachers have been working hard to coordinate a warm winter clothing drive, to help ensure that all of our students have what they need to stay warm this winter. Please let us know if your family needs support to get winter gear items, such as a warm coat, hat, gloves, or boots.

I am continuing to go into all classrooms to teach lessons that help students learn problem solving skills and to identify and combat bullying. We are also exploring possible future careers! It has been SO much fun listening to all the amazing career aspirations that our students have. I know that they will grow up to do incredible things!

As part of our district goal of helping students explore career goals in the future, we are happy to announce that our 5th and 6th grade students have the opportunity to attend the 5th Grade Career Fair, on November 15th, 2022. All 5th graders and 5th/6th combo classes in Spokane School District will have the chance to go to the Spokane County Fairgrounds, where they will meet with many amazing volunteers from our community to learn about different career opportunities! Students will then create a project about one of the careers they learned about. One project from our school will be selected to represent our school and will be entered into a district wide contest. Three lucky winners will be announced and will receive a prize from the School Board in February! More to come on this!

November is a new month and with that comes a new Purposeful People Character Trait. This month our character trait of the month is GRATITUDE. One way to think about Gratitude is “choosing to appreciate the people and things in our lives.” Practicing Gratitude can increase our well-being and our happiness. Gratitude is 1 of 3 traits we will focus on throughout the year that helps students Be Well. Throughout the school, students will be developing skills like emotional regulation, positive self-talk, and stress management.

We are practicing Gratitude this month by honoring all of our Veterans. Thank you so much for your service!

Proud to be a Husky!

Love,

Ms. Campbell
