In those days, the league was a "check league," he said. Since 1990, the play has been "no check," but still players age 25-and-over pack the arena four nights a week.
Like everything else in 2020, league play was cancelled. Now in 2021, nine teams are back and Glickman says "everybody is really excited."
Due to the pandemic, masks are required and players are asked to arrive dressed to play.
While many of the players are young, two team captains come in for games at ages 61 and 58.
"Most of these guys are in great shape and really athletic," said Glickman.
Regular season round-robin play ends in late May. The league is then split into the top and bottom tiers, with two more games and then a playoff within each tier. Tier A and Tier B are expected to crown their champions in early July.
"Not only is it great to have these guys back," said Glickman, "but our refs, rink staff and scorekeepers are back, too."
Hopefully, the return of the Skatium's adult hockey league is a sign of things to come for all of us.
