Pastor Ken's Pondering This Week ....

Posterity shall serve him; it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generations; they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn, that he had done it.”

Psalm 22:30-31

I have occasionally been asked (and wondered myself) why congregations exist.  It’s a good question. Why this emphasis on “coming together” in religious gatherings?

The word for congregation comes from the Greek term “ecclesia” (Hebrews 2:12), itself a product of the Jewish “synagogue” (Acts 13:43), and what the Old Testament calls “the assembly”.  You will even see in some translations of the Old Testament the word “congregation” used (Psalm 22:22).

One of the Four Core Values of the North American Lutheran Church (NALC) is that we are “Congregationally Focused”. This means our national leadership “strives to facilitate the ministries of local congregations in a posture of servanthood and a spirit of partnership…”.  These ministries exist to bring people together because God’s mission in the world is to bring all people together under the name of Jesus Christ.

Recall that in Genesis 2:18 God said “it is not good for the man to be alone". We learn what God is like by being with others made in His image.  Congregations exist to bring people together for worship, service in the Lord’s name, teaching the faith, and yes, enjoying one another’s company.  Your faith may be personal, but Christianity by God’s design is public. It is assembly. It is “the congregation” of the faithful.

Over these next few weeks, we are appealing to you to support our congregation financially, as you have done in previous years.  Pledges are not something we require, but we encourage them because they exhibit a commitment to the work we do together, in Jesus' name, in and through Calvary.  We would not exist without your support. We strive to use that support well and wisely, and we are so very thankful for what you give.  Your contributions make everything we do together possible.  I am sure the leadership of the NALC, being a “congregationally focused” church body, would agree with me that as a matter of first importance, Christians are called upon to support their congregation and its ministries.

But please recall our congregation’s recent history.

In 2011 Calvary welcomed the opportunity to become one of the first congregations of the NALC. This occurred, in large part, because of the other core values of the NALC – their commitment to being a “Christ Centered, Traditionally Grounded” church body.  This year, we are asking you to make a pledge beyond what you may have planned or normally give to our congregation. Please prayerfully consider supporting the NALC as it strives to carry out those core values and their vision to plant new congregations. In addition they can raise up leaders for congregations in the future. The largest allocation of funds raised in the NALC’s three-year, $5 million campaign (42%) is for seminary education, pastoral development, the call process, and youth and family ministries.

We are grateful to the denomination that received us in 2011. We support of its wonderful leaders, including Bishop Dan Selbo. I urge each of us to give to this campaign to strengthen our wider church that is so committed to its congregations.  The local church is a gift of the Holy Spirit, where “the gospel is preached in its fullness and the sacraments faithfully administered” (Augsburg Confession Article 7).

I am grateful to be part of a church body that knows that and wants to strengthen its congregations.   Your gifts and pledges support them both – thank you for them.

Because of a cross,

Pastor Ken Nelson

2020 Vision Prayer

From Bishop Dan Selbo

Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the Church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

–Ephesians 3:20-21

Almighty God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we thank you and praise you for the abundance of your mercy and the faithfulness of your grace revealed and given to us in Jesus Christ. We thank you for the calling we have in Him and for the way in which we have been brought together by You in the body of the North American Lutheran Church.

We pray for your Holy Spirit to guide us as we consider the opportunities we have to serve in ways that will honor You and as we share in the work entrusted to us by our Lord. We ask for open hearts to be attentive to Your leading, for open minds to be challenged and transformed by Your love, and for generous and faith-filled spirits to respond to the calling we share.

Lord, we pray for the 2020 Vision of our church, asking for You to continue to work through us to carry out Your will. We pray that our individual gifts will be used in collective ways to offer a witness to the world of the salvation found only in the cross and resurrection of our Lord Jesus.

Strengthen our faith. Bless our work. Use our lives, that the life-giving message of Jesus would be proclaimed and heard, today, tomorrow & forever. Amen.

Back on October 28-29 Calvary was the site for the annual Convocation of the Wisconsin/Upper Michigan Mission District of the North American Lutheran Church (NALC).

Special thanks to Pastor Nelson, and everyone in the church office for their great hospitality in making the event possible. Thanks also to those who worked in the kitchen, providing food and drink for those in attendance.

Also, thanks to Nicole for helping us sing and pray during times of worship. Special thanks to Marcella Nelson who labored mightily in bringing about a training session on disaster relief with NALC director Mary Bates.

I found it a blessing to come together with brothers and sisters from across Wisconsin and the UP. In fact it was a source of inspiration for me to realize the commitment folks brought to the gathering, traveling several hours for the sake of the Lord’s mission.

The Lord’s people at Calvary were blessed with the convenience of not having to travel. When such an opportunityis in one’s backyard, it is good and wise to take advantage of such a time.

Oh, how good and pleasant it is when brethren live together in unity! (Psalm 133:1)

Heading into the final days of the church year, may our hearts and minds be continually focused on Christ, the one and only true King.

In Christ,

Pastor Mark W. Knappe, STS

Co-Dean Wisconsin/Upper Michigan Mission District.

Adult Bible Study - Lutheran Next Steps

A new Adult Bible Study class - THE LUTHERAN NEXT STEPS meets on Sundays at 10:30 a.m.  This eight-week course meets in the Media Room at 10:30 a.m. and will be facilitated by Pastor Ken Nelson. This course was created a few years ago when Pastor Ken was engaged in the “Life to Life Discipleship” initiative of the Navigators and the NALC.

The course is a solid, basic overview of the Christian faith. It encourages participants to increase their Bible reading, includes some memorization of key passages, and will culminate in the opportunity to create and share (in groups of 2 or 3) a personal “faith story” (or what some traditions called “testimonies”). The goal of this study is to present the Christian faith in a straight-forward, Biblically sound way to deepen our knowledge of those beliefs. This will equip participants for those moments when they may be presented an opportunity to witness to someone about our faith and the Lord Jesus.

Pastor Ken's Weekly Bible Study

Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. in Fellowship Hall

Pastor Ken's weekly Bible study is held each Wednesday from 12:30 -1:30 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. He will lead discussion around the Scripture lessons that will be read in worship the following weekend.

Please bring your Bibles - other materials will be provided. Copies of the text study sheets will be available on the table in the Narthex if you can't attend the Bible study, but would like to refer to it for the weekend worship.

November Mission of the Month

Care Net Pregnancy Center of Milwaukee

Care Net Pregnancy Center is a newer mission for Calvary and we are thrilled to be part of those helping to fund and spread its good work. Several of us have visited and volunteered on site and have witnessed the work of God that this group does. Below is the PURPOSE and MISSION of CareNet:

PURPOSE: To uphold the sanctity of human life and share the love of Christ and the hope of the Gospel with women and their families facing an unplanned pregnancy.

MISSION: To encourage women to choose life by offering spiritual and practical care during and after pregnancy.

In 2021, our Learn to Earn program blossomed!

  • 110 women took 517 classes: To prepare for their babies, to be in fellowship with others and to be encouraged in their faith.

  • After taking classes, women go shopping in our beautiful Counted Sparrows Boutique. In Matthew 10, Jesus tells his disciples "Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God?" We share this truth with our clients that they are valuable to God and are not forgotten by Him!

  • We believe the beauty of the Counted Sparrows Boutique reflects this teaching

Please consider supporting Care Net in their godly work, as well as possibly volunteering at the site. Click here to be directed to their website for more information. To support this important Mission of the Month, you may include it in your weekly offering envelope or designate the donation as "Mission of the Month" in your online giving.

Community Outreach

GARLIC AND SAPPHIRES is Ruth Reichl's riotous account of the many disguises she employs to dine anonymously. There is her stint as Molly Hollis, a frumpy blond with manicured nails and an off-beige Armani suit that Ruth takes on when reviewing Le Cirque. The result: her famous double review of the restaurant - first she ate there as Molly; and then as she was coddled and pampered on her visit there as Ruth, New York Times food critic.

What is even more remarkable about Reichl's spy games is that as she takes on these various disguises, she finds herself changed not just superficially, but in character as well. She gives a remarkable account of how one's outer appearance can very much influence one's inner character, expectations, and appetites.

Facing tough times? Need a Christian Friend?
Stephen Ministry is here to help. Free, just like God's love.

Stephen Ministers are congregation members trained by Stephen Leaders to offer high-quality, one-to-one Christian care to people going through tough times. A Stephen Minister usually provides care to one person at a time, meeting with that person once a week for about an hour.

If you, or someone you know, could benefit from this important ministry, please contact Scott or Peggy Langelin at 262.853.0018.

NEW!  Live Stream attendance link

If you watch our services via the Live Stream, please take a minute to let us know. There is now a link called "Online Worship Attendance" on the page where you access each week's service.

We appreciate you taking the time to complete this each week. It helps us know that our Live Stream is being viewed and by whom.

Thank you!

Sanctuary Flowers

We invite you to sign up for flowers to beautify our altar each weekend.

The sign-up sheet for 2023 is now posted on the bulletin board in the Narthex.

Flowers are $35 and you may take them home following the 9 a.m. worship on Sunday morning. If you'd prefer, you can leave the flowers at church to be enjoyed by the office staff.

The right side of the Sanctuary (as you face the altar) is equipped with a hearing loop system which transmits an audio signal directly into a hearing aid via a magnetic field. This greatly reduces background noise, competing sounds, reverberation and other acoustic distortions that reduce clarity of sound.

Most hearing aids are equipped with a t-coil and connecting to this system is an easy switch on the hearing aid. If you need assistance during worship with this system, please reach out to an usher or any staff member.
The church office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until noon. The door that is closest to the office (NW corner) will be open during those hours.

Please check in with the office staff so we know you are in the building.

The office phone number is (262) 786-4010. Feel free to leave a message if you call after hours and we will contact you the next day.
