Is it just me, or does life seem to get busier and busier? I keep thinking things are going to slow down a little bit, but everything just seems to be speeding up. First quarter feels like yesterday, yet the holidays are just around the corner.
A friend reminded me recently how important it is to live your life in a way that is true to your values. What is really important to you? Does that align with how you are spending your time? If not, what are you doing about it? Self-reflection can be really, really hard, but it's also really, really important, particularly given how fast the world seems to be spinning.
We've asked each member of our board and each of our team members to do a little introspection when it comes to Cobb Community Foundation. We give a lot of ourselves, and it's important that we know why. Each week, we share these reasons on social media with our "Why Wednesday" posts. As you ponder how you are spending your time, I thought you might enjoy watching why this is one way we've chosen to spend ours.

From Apprehensive Tears to a Proud Smile

"I just wanted to share one of the stories of the impact of the donation you gave us for our Y Little School Camp this summer. There are many more that I could share because this donation made a difference to ALL 14 kids that were enrolled for 4 weeks."
Gayle shared that one child in particular made a lot of progress. On the first day of school, the teachers reported that little Sofia came in crying because she didn't want to be away from mom or with strangers. As the morning went on, Sofia became more engaged and stopped crying.
Gayle said, "We worked on spelling their names the first day of Little School Camp. Sofia could not spell her name. She was shy. But by the end of the four weeks, Sofia was making friends, coming into class with a smile, and she now ..... Read More

Howard Koepka Collaborative Spirit Award
|
|
Howard Koepka’s calling was to connect and mobilize people and organizations to serve. He did everything from organizing community service days in greater Atlanta to building a school, church and orphanage in Haiti to leading disaster relief efforts in Puerto Rico.
Fortunately for Cobb County, Howard joined Noonday Association of Churches and in late March of 2020, with Noonday’s blessing, he agreed to help Cobb Community Foundation with coordinated communication efforts during the pandemic. Howard hosted weekly calls open to all nonprofit, government and faith-based organizations that were distributing food in Cobb County. He would ask each one how “we” could help, making it clear .... Welcome Advocates for Children Endowment Fund
|

The team at Advocates for Children (Advocates) is working hard to strengthen our community through education, advocacy, and prevention programs, empowering families to be free from child abuse. Serving families in Cobb and 10 other North Georgia counties, operations have been conducted at various locations since their start in 1983.
With continuous growth, their 11 programs served more than 15,000 children and adults in the last 4 years. Understanding the access challenges faced by client families, and with a modern approach to trauma-informed services, President and CEO Rachel Castillo knew it was time to make some changes. She and her team have worked together with community partners including educators, public safety officers, local businesses, churches, and agencies like Cobb Community Foundation (CCF) to create their “Build Strong Families. Protect Children.” .... Read More

Bright Spots in the Midst of Economic Challenges

Bear markets aren’t much fun for anyone. But that doesn’t mean your charitable giving commitments have to be put on hold. If you are like many donors, you are still looking for ways to support the organizations you care about that rely on your support to achieve their missions.
Remember, not every stock is down. It’s still incredibly tax-efficient to donate highly-appreciated stock to your fund at the community foundation. When you give appreciated stock held for more than one year (a long-term capital asset) to your donor-advised or other type of fund, instead of selling it outright, the capital gains tax is avoided. Plus, marketable securities are typically deductible at their fair market value, further helping your overall income.... Read More
