Happy Friday,

Wow- we've enjoyed some gorgeous weather this week. My fingers are crossed that we can finish the year with sun and warm weather.

If you're a 3rd - 5th grade parent please remember to look over the upcoming assessment calendar below. Our 5th grade students are up first and will be taking the Science Assessment on April 19-21. Please reach out to your child's teacher if you have any questions regarding the assessments.

School News

2021-22 Class Placement Input (DUE BY APRIL 30th)

It's time for us to begin thinking about class placements for the next school year. We invite parents to provide input on their child's placement by submitting an email to me at [email protected]. E-mails are optional and will be kept confidential. If you don't have concerns about your child's placement, there's no need to send input. If you do opt to send an email, please abide by the following parameters:

Please do not request specific teachers. If you have had personal experience with a teacher, you can give input on that relationship, otherwise, please only include information about the type of classroom environment that you believe would benefit your child.
You may make a request to separate your child from another child whom he/she was in class this year. Please note, if you make a "separate from" request, this will take top priority in placing your child. If you have a "separate from" request for a child who is NOT currently in your child's class, please explain the extenuating circumstances behind this request.
You may suggest multiple students who may be a good match to be placed with your child. We make our best effort to place students with at least one friend, typically from their current class. If your child has close friends outside of their current class placement, please let us know! This is particularly important after a year with remote learning and smaller class sizes due to the pandemic. We can't guarantee that we will be able to place students based on friend requests, but we'll try to use the information whenever possible.

We take class placement decisions very seriously and our teachers dedicate a great deal of time to putting together balanced groups. Please also feel free to have conversations with your child's teacher to discuss placement for next year.

ALL PARENT INPUT IS DUE TO ME/TEACHERS BY APRIL 30th. Information received after that date may not be included in placement discussions.

The schedule for the Illinois State Assessments has been finalized. Please see below for a list of times/days we will be assessing after spring break. Our Remote Learning students will be assessed on-site for all tests.

Update on the Quarantine States:

Please see the information listed below for an update on the emergency travel orders. All 'yellow' states DO NOT require a quarantine.

Dental Examination Reminder

As a reminder, all children in kindergarten, second, sixth and ninth grades are required to submit evidence of a dental examination. The State of Illinois Proof of School Dental Form must be completed within 18 months prior to May 15, 2021 when it is required to be on file at school.

Remote Learning Academy News

Health Check Required for State Assessments

When RLA students in grades 3-5 come to school for state assessments in the coming weeks, parents will need to complete a health certification form each day for their child. Parents will receive an email and text notification with the link to the form at 6:30 a.m. every day during testing. You only need to complete the form on the days your child is coming to school. Review the questions here.

A section of this form pertains to travel outside the state. Parents and guardians will be asked to review the emergency travel order map if the student spends more than 24 hours out of state. Anyone traveling from an 'orange' state or from an international destination is directed to quarantine for 10 days. Travel from a 'yellow' state does not require quarantine.

Please review this information in order to prepare for your child to attend school for state assessments.

District News

Registration for 2021-22 Opens April 15

Registration for the 2021-22 school year opens April 15. All registration is conducted online. Parents will receive an email on April 15 from Data Specialist Vicky Mazur that will include the ‘Snap Code’ needed to enroll your children for next year and a link to the registration portal. If you do not receive an email on April 15, please contact your school’s administrative assistant.

Parents will be asked to update student information and pay student fees for the coming school year.

Music Program Receives 5th National Recognition

While live music around the world has been silenced due to the pandemic, music education has continued. Parents haven’t gathered for annual holiday or spring concerts. Fifth-grade musicals were not staged. But students still assemble for morning band and orchestra rehearsals in well-ventilated rooms or outside; chorus members sing through cotton masks socially distanced; and elementary and junior high students are studying and creating music with iPads and ukuleles.

While music education this year was not typical, our educators prevailed with creativity and the support of the district with special masks, instrument covers and air filters to make it possible. This is one reason why Northbrook continues to be recognized with the Best Communities for Music Education designation for its outstanding commitment to music education. Good news: the Bluestem and Caudill 2022 nominee lists were just released!

The Westmoor PTO is happy to contribute towards a school purchase of these books for our library. Many of the titles are already available with more copies to come! Books may be placed on hold through your child's Destiny Discover account. Digital/audio downloads are already available for direct checkout.

The Rebecca Caudill Young Readers' Book Award is Illinois' Readers' Choice award for students in grades 4-8.
