Amanda Tufano, MHA, FACHE, FACMPE

Chief Executive Officer, Genevive

How did you get involved with house calls?

My involvement with house calls is primarily the result of working at Genevive. As the largest geriatric practice in Minnesota with more than 185 employees, Genevive delivers primary care in a variety of settings, including long- and short-term care facilities, assisted living facilities, as well as a small home-based practice. My main interests as Genevive’s CEO tend to be areas like Medicare contracting, contract negotiations, improving backend efficiencies, and human resources.

HCCI Holds Successful Sessions at AAHCM Annual Meeting

During the American Academy of Home Care Medicine’s 2022 Annual Meeting, “Home Based Medical Care: Growth Across the Field,” in Orlando on Oct. 28-29, HCCI held two successful sessions.

Dana Crosby, Senior Director, Engagement and Practice Development, HCCI, presented How to Attract and Hire a Diverse Staff that Reflects Your Patient Population. During the session, Crosby explained that “diversity is having a seat at the table, inclusion is having a voice, and belonging is having that voice heard.”

“There is much conversation regarding health equity, and rightfully so,” Crosby said. “We must reduce disparities in healthcare, but we also must recognize the value and necessity of having our providers and staff reflect not only diversity but also understand the importance of this reflection. It was heartwarming and inspiring to have so many attendees come to talk with me after the session about their own experiences with this challenge. They shared how the tools and resources I provided would help them, and, more importantly, the validation and recognition of this gap. The overwhelming message I received was, ‘Thank you, it was nice to be seen.’”

During the meeting, James Warda, Vice President of External Affairs and Business Development, HCCI, gave a presentation on the topic Driving Practice Growth through Marketing, Media Relations and Your Community. Warda shared how to promote practices to community stakeholders and media outlets through marketing and compelling messaging.

“It was exciting to be in the room with so many passionate providers, practice staff, and all of those who make the home-based care field so special,” Warda said. “Listening to their stories of why they do what they do and how they got started was the perfect entry point into talking about why it’s important to share these stories through many different channels, including media and marketing, to get the word out to the community about house calls. After all, if a tree falls in the forest….”

Education Update

Get Free Resources during National Caregivers Month

November marks National Family Caregivers Month, a time to recognize the love and dedication  of more than 50 million Americans who provide care to parents and other loved ones, according to the White House. These caregivers are not alone. HCCI offers free caregivers resources to increase awareness of HBPC, including “conversation starters” for talking with the patient’s primary care provider about obtaining HBPC; how the resource can help them manage their demanding responsibilities and take care of their own needs; and how to access community resources.

You’ll also find a link there to the National Home Care Medicine Practice Directory developed by the American Academy of Home Care Medicine Medicine (AAHCM) in partnership with the National Home-Based Primary Care Learning Network and the Home Centered Care Institute. According to AAHCM, “the online directory helps patients, and their families, connect to trusted, local home care medicine providers, while also supporting the full complement of healthcare organizations who can use the directory as a resource for referrals and new care team relationships.”

“I found HCCI’s chart review and audit extremely helpful. The written report was detailed and provided great tips for improving documentation to gain additional reimbursement. They [HCCI] also provided useful handouts and website links. As I am a solo house call physician, I can definitely say that having HCCI review my charts was a worthwhile investment.”
