RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS & PRESENTATIONS
An article co-authored by Associate Professor Peter Bobkowski and doctoral student Harrison Rosenthal has been accepted for publication in the journal Journalism Practice. The article is titled “Journalism civic self-efficacy: Predicting political participation among secondary-school journalism students.”

Associate Professor Hyunjin Seo was a speaker at the NSF RESET Conference: Re-Enter STEM through Emerging Technology on March 4. Seo discussed ways academic institutions and nonprofit organizations can better support women and other underrepresented populations in the technology workforce.

Virtual tour video of the J-School and Stauffer-Flint Hall
Come along on a virtual tour of the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications. The video, which was created by student Laura Richey and a cast and crew of J-School students, is designed to give prospective students who are unable to visit a look inside the school.
The Journalism 611 Sales Strategies class recently had several guest speakers:
Lisa McLendon, Bremner Editing Center coordinator and news and information track chair, shared some of the important skills necessary for professional writing. McLendon focused on the importance of clear writing in a professional business environment, especially the role it plays in emails. She also offered some writing tips to enhance resumes and job applications.
Mollie Pointer, j'14, director of client partnerships for Axios and former business manager at the University Daily Kansan, talked about the importance of listening in sales to understand the needs and problems of a client. She also addressed the importance of networking and the impact it’s had on her career growth.
Nick Dalley, president of Intentional Communication Inc., has coached CEOs, heads of states, politicians and attorneys to refine their presentation skills and shared with the class many of those same skills he teaches professionals. He spoke about the important role presentation skills play in sales and provided the students with skills to enhance Zoom and other online presentations.

Second anniversary for Eudora Times
The Eudora Times celebrates its second anniversary this month. The award-winning newspaper formed in 2019 for KU journalism students to provide reporting for a news desert community. Students (pictured) Lucie Krisman, Chris Fortune, Nicole Asbury and Cami Koons lead the current reporting team with Associate Professor Teri Finneman. In the last two years, KU student reporters have written more than 400 stories, the majority of which would not have been covered otherwise. More than 32,000 unique visitors have visited the site. In the next few weeks, the newspaper will move from Wix to a new website, eudoratimes.com. Students interested in getting involved with the Eudora Times should email Dr. Finneman at [email protected].
The KC Ad Club Foundation Scholarship deadline has been extended to March 14. Winners receive:
  • Financial assistance of $1,500 a year (paid in $750 per semester increments)
  • A mentor, who will be a working professional in the area of the business the student is interested in pursuing
  • Free membership in AAF-KC
  • Free admission to every AAF-KC event, excluding the American Advertising Award

The BrandLab, a nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the face and voice of the marketing industry, is accepting applications for LabFellows, an eight-month virtual fellowship in conjunction with Wunderman Thompson, Best Buy, Optum and Essence to provide Black, Indigenous, People of Color access to break into the marketing and advertising industry. KU Study Abroad is offering summer and fall study abroad and global internship opportunities. Modified to incorporate best practices in mitigating COVID-19 transmission and spread, extensive opportunities are available for disciplinary and cultural learning.

Students are encouraged to apply for more than $10,000 in scholarships raised through Gridiron, a Wichita stage show starring members of the local media. Gridiron is put on by the Kansas Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. Deadline to apply is March 31. Learn more and apply here.

FleishmanHillard, an international public relations and integrated marketing firm, is offering the following opportunities to recent graduates and seniors:
Alfred Fleishman Diversity Fellowship: Offers young professionals the opportunity to combine their communication talents with their passion for diversity, equity and inclusion. This paid fellowship is six to 12 months in length and offers benefits, professional development opportunities and a mentor program. Fellows contribute to a variety of client projects, gaining practical experience in the field of integrated communications from some of the industry’s best counselors. 
Summer 2021 Public Relations Internship: This full-time, paid internship gives participants real-life experiences and skills that will provide a foundation for success in their communications careers. The internship runs from May 24 to Sept. 2. Deadline is March 15.

Ninety-five students participate in J-School Career Fair
Twenty-one employers connected virtually with 95 University of Kansas students on Thursday at the Journalism Career Fair. During the six-hour event, employers conducted 247 interviews. The Kansas City Star, which had a scheduling conflict the day of the fair, plans to host a virtual informational session at 3 p.m. March 30. All students interested in learning more about internship and job opportunities are welcome to attend. A link to the session will be available in the coming days.

Baron to accept National Citation during online event April 21
Martin Baron, retired executive editor of The Washington Post, will accept the William Allen White National Citation award during a virtual event at 4 p.m. April 21 during an online discussion with J-School students, faculty, staff, trustees and alumni. The event also will be open to the public. Link to register will be provided closer to the event date. Baron was selected as the 2020 National Citation recipient and was scheduled to receive the award and give an address on the KU campus last April, but the event was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The public is invited to a Women’s History Month Lecture featuring Dr. Kristen R. Ghodsee, author of "Why Women Have Better Sex Under Socialism: And Other Arguments for Economic Independence." Dr. Ghodsee, Professor of Russian and East European Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, will speak at 6 p.m. March 9 on the socialist history of International Women’s Day. Register here.

The Dole Institute of Politics and the J-School are sponsoring a special event at 7 p.m. March 9 featuring historians Claire Bond Potter and Renee C. Romano talking about their book, "Historians on Hamilton: How a Blockbuster Musical is Restaging America’s Past." Learn more and register here.
Kansas Association of Broadcasters Student Seminar
The Kansas Association of Broadcasters Annual Student Seminar will take place virtually April 8. Students can register for special sessions from industry leaders, a panel Q&A with some of Kansas’ top broadcasters, roundtable conversations and a career fair. Learn more and register.
ALUMNI UPDATE
Hannah Wise, j'14, has been selected as a 2021-2022 Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute fellow. Wise, social strategy editor at The New York Times, will create a toolkit that guides newsrooms through how to evaluate the accessibility of their products to the disability community and how they represent disability in their coverage.
