Remember in May, when it felt like the days were dragging on? We were working, homeschooling, stressed out, scared, and maybe eating and drinking more than we should? I thought 2020 would never end. Now here we are! The last half of the year just happened, and I haven't quite caught my breath. We have become experts at adapting. We mastered Zoom, we found touch free solutions to problems we didn't even know existed, and we figured out how to cut things out of our lives that don't make sense. If you think about it, we crammed like 5 years of a strategic plan into 5 months. We did this for our business, our home, and our social lives. It is kind of cool if you think about it. I think there are a lot of things we gave up that we aren't that sad about. And we found out what matters the most. The people. The friends and family, customers and clients, and our co-workers. My year as the Chamber president showed me this too. We can trade in monthly meetings and promote more outdoor activities and we can keep focusing on the people in our area. I am truly in awe watching Jamie, Katie, Mallory, Tia, and Alicia work. We asked the world of our Chamber staff. We asked to keep what we had going on, improve other areas, cut expenses, expand our reach, track down programs to help businesses and individuals, and to literally reinvent the way we've always done things. We've called on our board to make big decisions. It wasn't the year I expected when I got to become the president. I wanted to do something cool with my time here. I wanted to make some magic happen. But the magic was already here. The board, the staff, and the community more than rose to the challenges. I'm so proud of where we were, where we are, and where we are going. So as weird as it sounds, 2020 has been an incredible year.

| PPP Forgiveness Tax Guidance |  The U.S. Treasury Department and the IRS issued guidance on Nov.18 further clarifying that: - Expenses paid with forgiven Paycheck Protection Program loans will not be deductible; and
- Borrowers whose PPP forgiveness is at least partially denied, or who opt to forgo forgiveness, may deduct such expenses in the tax year they decide to forgo the forgiveness. Read more.

The holidays are here -the season of giving!
As you're thinking about what you're going to wrap up for your loved ones this year, I offer a couple of recommendations.
First, think about the gifts you can purchase here in town. Presents bought in Pierre are not only great for the receiver, they're the gift that keeps on giving. Every dollar spent locally turns over an average of seven times in the community. That means it helps out another handful of businesses and feeds into our local quality of life. The businesses benefit from the profit piece of the sale, and your ongoing benefit comes from the tax piece of the sale. Remember, local sales tax funds your streets, parks, and police.
With the exception of a little discomfort, my second recommendation costs you very little. Give a gift to yourself and to your community by following the COVID-19 safety guidelines. That means washing your hands often, staying home when you're sick, social distancing, and wearing a mask when you can't social distance.
I too enjoy holiday gatherings, grazing through a buffet of holiday cookies, and handing out hugs and handshakes to all the friends and relatives I only see during the holidays. But this year, I'm committed to giving my family and my community the gift of safety. I wear a mask when I'm in retail businesses. I wear a mask when I visit my parents. I wear a mask when I'm around people with compromised immune systems. And I wear a mask when I can't social distance.
I recommend and encourage you to do the same; give the gift of a healthy holiday season.

| PEDCO Update on The Status of SD CARES Small Business Grant Applications Being Processed | -
Applicants should expect to receive a check in mid-December if an application had all the required information and it is determined to be eligible for a grant.
- Should an additional piece of information be needed to complete the application, or when a clarification is required, the applicant will receive a request for that information at the email address used to apply for the grant.
- To avoid delay or possible rejection of a grant application, check that email address frequently, including junk/spam folders, to determine if a request for clarifying information has been sent. Businesses are strongly urged to respond promptly to any emails they receive to keep their application eligible.
- Applicants can check the status of their grant by logging into the grant portal at https://sdcovidhelp.force.com/Grants/s/login/. Use the email address and password used to apply for the grant to log-in. Click "APPLICATION" in the menu at the top left of the portal home page. Under the column "APPLICATION STATUS," if the status is shown as "RETURNED," applicants should immediately check their email, including junk/spam, to learn what information needs to be clarified.
- Delayed applications are still eligible for funding once the required information is clarified. However, all grant funds must be disbursed by December 30, which will be the last "drop dead" date of receiving a grant payment.
If you are unable to find an email regarding a "RETURNED" application, or need other assistance, call the SD CARES Grant Hotline at 605-937-7243 for assistance.

| | The Chamber had the privilege of decorating a rotunda tree for Christmas at the Capitol. Our tree is sponsored by MIDCO in honor of Girls on the Run/Girls On Track. |
Christmas at the Capitol is in full swing. The trees are on display from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, now through December 26, 2020. Invite family and friends to view the trees. I promise you will not be disappointed after seeing the beautiful displays. This year's theme is 'Deck the Halls.'
After looking at the trees, don't forget to check out the second annual 'Light up the Pierre Area' contest. A map of area residents happy to show off their home's lighting displays will be available on the Chamber Facebook page. Grab some hot chocolate, load up the family and take a driving tour. Don't forget to cast your vote online at pierre.org for your favorite homes!
The Pierre Convention & Visitors Bureau is finishing the marketing plan for 2021. We will be continuing with successful concepts that have remained in the plan for the past few years and will implement some new ideas as well. The marketing plan is an effective foundation to facilitate getting the word out to people interested in visiting our beautiful area.

I have so many good memories of growing up in Pierre, and especially the holidays. My parents moved to South Dakota from Washington/Montana when I was a newborn, leaving their own families in Washington for a new start. It was just us five Hartford's in South Dakota. I know my parents missed their families during the holidays; they only went back to Washington every other year and seldom did we have Washington family come visit us. Maybe that is why my parents made our holiday festivities so special growing up. Birthdays, Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and sometimes just a Friday night were all reasons to celebrate.
Mom usually worked on Christmas Eve, my sister and brother would come home from college and we would all meet in the back room at Klocker Furniture for lunch. In later years mom had decorated the Chinese Restaurant downtown, and we were invited to celebrate Christmas Eve with the owners and their family. This turned out to be the next tradition, and one that is still carried out by my sister and brother. That evening we would get to open one gift before bed. I always hoped it was something great...and it always was.
Christmas morning mom and dad would be woken by three very anxious kids who wanted to open their gifts and see what Santa brought. We knew better than to go downstairs on our own; mom and dad had to start the coffee, plug in the Christmas tree, and turn on the music. Santa's gifts didn't come wrapped at our house so we would sit at the top of the stairs waiting for the ok to come check out the goods! We would take turns opening gifts one at a time. I remember thinking it took soooo long for my turn. Later that day mom and dad would make a big meal and we would sit by the fire and play Spite and Malace. So many good memories and so many traditions.
Christmas might look different for everyone this year, but I challenge you find the bright spots in the holiday and make great memories and possibly some new traditions!

Goodwill of the Great Plains' Shoe and Mitten Program will be held December 8th, 2020 for children ages 5-11 in need of new shoes, socks, hats, and mittens. This year's event is pickup only.
Visit your local Goodwill store at 1902 Eastgate Avenue to register. Registration is limited and on a first come, first served basis. (Confirming Facebook Event attendance does not count as registration.)
For over 70 years, our Shoe and Mitten Program has been bringing smiles to the faces of children throughout our territory during the frigid month of December.
Each year we provide close to 3,000 children, territory wide, in grades Kindergarten through Fifth with a brand new pair of shoes, pack of socks, warm winter mittens and a hat.

Onward to 2021. . .
What a nine months we've all put in! Work has been stressful, home life uprooted in many ways and mentally we're all stressed. But it looks like there might be a light coming in the future. But until that happens, the reality of NOW is still here, and we need to work at going onward. It can be daunting to say the least - maybe a couple of these things will help.
- Set goals - even if you are working from home, at the office, or not working right now. Look ahead and do a bit of planning and thinking of maybe new possibilities.
- Write - journal or blog. Putting thoughts on paper can help them from going around and around in our head.
- Keep in touch - everyone needs that person that reaches out to them and says "hey, I'm thinking about you." Do some laughing or crying - both are a great help with our stress.
- Watch your thoughts - don't let something or someone rent space in your head when they don't deserve to be there. Use that space for inspiring thoughts.
- Check your habits - HEAD UP - PHONE DOWN! Don't constantly check emails, texts or social media - plan a time to do that.
- Stop and Play - take time for you. In this time of unrest, you need to simply get away from those things that don't matter as much as you might think. You are the important one.
Have a great Christmas. It may be different than some before, but we know that will change. And, be careful and be safe - COVID - 19 is real, but we will get to the other side and look back on this time - just like many before of have had to do in tough situations...
