Global governments are still walking a tightrope between easing coronavirus lockdowns to revive economic growth, and attempting to control any resurgence of Covid-19. Governments that raced to the rescue as the pandemic hit their economies now also face the dilemma of whether to extend their massive bailouts of businesses and labor markets.
New York City, the largest U.S. school system, decided schools can re-open in September, defying the trend toward remote learning. Australia’s Victoria state had its deadliest day and New Zealand put its biggest city, Auckland, back in lockdown. Russia registered its first coronavirus vaccine, to some skepticism, and plans mass inoculation this month before clinical testing is complete.
