Improving Patient Care Through Philanthropy

While COVID-19 may have received the bulk of the headlines over the past year, Providence has continued to meet all the health care needs of our community -- despite a global pandemic. Your gift to Providence Health Care Foundation is an investment in the health of our community and helps us continue the vital work that was started when the Sisters of Providence opened the region's first hospital in 1886.

We're pleased to share some of the ways your dollars are making a difference.

New Robot Tackles Complex Spine Surgeries

The name alone is impressive, but even better, the Globus Excelsius Spine Robot has the potential to revolutionize spine surgery at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center.

This $1.4 million piece of equipment was recently purchased and is already being put to work, thanks to generous donors to PHC Foundation.

Adding robotic technology will allow surgeons to push the limits of minimally invasive

surgery, accomplishing more complex spinal procedures with less disruption of normal tissues. This will result in faster recovery times and shorter hospital stays. The robot will be used by the eight neurosurgeons in the Providence Spokane Neuroscience Institute, including Dr. David Gruber and Dr. Nathaniel Whitney, pictured above. It's projected that 300 cases will be done robotically this year.

The hospital can be a scary place. Child life specialists at Sacred Heart Children's Hospital calm those fears by helping children and families cope with the challenges of hospitalization, illness and disability.

KXLY 4 News Now's Miracle Monday segment recently featured one little girl's story. Watch it here.

Sacred Heart Children's Hospital is a Children's Miracle Network Hospital. When you see a CMNH balloon and are asked to "round-up" your purchase or make a donation, you know that your money will stay local to benefit patients like Allison (pictured at right).

Welcome Victoria, Our New Birthing Simulator

The Dr. James W. Mounsey Simulation Lab recently welcomed a new, more realistic birthing simulator to replace an outdated "mom" who, after thousands of "births," was ready for retirement.

"Victoria" is a lifelike robotic manikin that's valued at nearly $80,000 and was purchased with foundation funds. She can be programmed to simulate a number of high-risk obstetric emergencies, including hypertension, hemorrhage and other complications.

Victoria births a full-term baby featuring programmable vitals. She joins an entire family of human patient simulators critical training aids of all ages and genders.

Since June 2016, the SimLab has trained more than 14,500 caregivers from all specialties, including medical students and medical residents.

Donor Spotlight: Jersey Mike's Subs

Last week's Jersey Mike's Day of Giving raised more than $21,000 for the Arts in Healing program at Sacred Heart Children's Hospital. Since entering the Spokane market in 2016, Jersey Mike's has been a steadfast foundation partner, raising a total of more than $70,000

"We are so proud and privileged to be able to support our community with the help of our amazing customers," said Jeff Gates, franchise owner. This year's numbers exceeded the 2019 fundraising total of $15,000. Last year's Day of Giving was canceled due to COVID-19, so the Jersey Mike's team was determined to make up for lost time. Volunteers at both locations helped coordinate curbside delivery, including Kate, Campbell and Charlie, pictured above.

The Arts in Healing program provides young patients with creative therapies including visual art, writing, music and dance. Research shows these therapies can shorten hospital stays, reduce the need for pain management, and ease stress and anxiety.
