J-School lecturer writes children's book with Kansas congresswoman
|
Lecturer Nancy Mays is co-author of a children’s book with U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids, which was published last month. The book, “Sharice’s Big Voice: A Native Kid Becomes a Congresswoman,” tells Davids' story, from childhood to being elected to represent Kansas in Congress. Read the news story here.

Associate Professor Teri Finneman is the incoming Publications Chair of the journal Journalism History. This is also a board position within the AEJMC History Division. Finneman has spent the past year serving as the liaison between the division and the journal following her year as division chair. She will help position the journal ahead of its 50th anniversary.
Associate Professor Genelle Belmas has been elected to serve on the Hall Center for the Humanities Executive Committee starting in Fall 2021 for a three-year term. She will work with the committee and Hall Center staff to guide program development and serve on selection committees.
Heather Lawrenz was accepted into the Adobe Education Leader program for the third year. This program recognizes an educator's achievement as a global leader in creative education. Adobe Education Leaders are innovative thought leaders in education who effectively use Adobe tools to promote excellence in students’ development of creative problem solving and critical thinking skills.
Lawrenz also renewed her highly qualified Kansas teaching license, allowing her to still teach middle school art, journalism, and sociology. The renewal required 120 professional development hours. (She submitted over 300).
Rachel Ross has resigned her position in the J-School. She is returning to the Shared Service Center to work with programs in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. We wish her well and thank her for her service to the school. The position is open for applications until July 28.

J-School to hire Equity Advisor/Curator for DEIB
|
The William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications seeks an Equity Advisor to serve as the Curator for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB). The Equity Advisor/Curator’s role is to develop ways in which DEIB can be interpreted — through education, presentations, events, experiential work and personal outreach.The Equity Advisor/Curator brings people together and engages with internal and external audiences to promote DEIB. Associate Professor Jerry Crawford’s manuscript proposal, “Journalism at Historically Black Colleges and Universities: Governance and Accreditation” has been accepted for publication by Palgrave Macmillan and will be published in print and eBook, as part of open access. The book will focus on the 34 years of journalism accreditation at HBCUs and how they faced challenges in attaining and keeping the status. The book will also look at MSIs, the creation of programs, and how administrators have handled the loss of accreditation and the current pandemic crisis.
Professor Hyunjin Seo’s Kansas Digital Equity and Inclusion Collaborative proposal has been selected for funding by Kansas Health Foundation in the amount of $249,857. The project is designed to build community partnerships and advocate for policy improvements in the areas of digital equity and inclusion to better support marginalized populations in Kansas.

Congratulations to doctoral student Ursula Kamanga, who has received AEJMC’s 2021 Carolyn Stroman Award, which is presented to graduate students who are presenting research for the first time in the Minorities and Communication (MAC) Division. MAC is AEJMC’s oldest unit focused on issues of diversity and has been the place for presenting research and providing teaching tips on issues of diversity, equity and inclusion for 49 years.
Students at Northwestern University recently produced videos about innovative news projects produced by journalism students, including the Eudora Times. Read the story.
