CCTU AUGUST ANNUAL PICNIC (replaces Aug mtg)
TUESDAY, AUGUST 17, 5PM
REYNOLDS LANDING PARK
FOOD - THE DENVER TACO TRUCK
ACTIVITY - PETER STITCHER, ASCENT FLYFISHING, STREAMSIDE ENTOMOLOGY & MATCHING THE HATCH
|
|
Join us at the Annual Picnic on August 17th at Reynolds Landing on the South Platte River. A limited number of volunteers needed starting at 4pm, picnic activities officially starts at 5pm.
Dinner and drinks will be available from The Denver Taco Truck. Check out their menu Denver Taco Truck Menu. You can bring and consume your own alcoholic beverages – but we must jump through a couple of hoops to satisfy local liquor laws. Officially, you can donate beverages to CCTU and then buy the beverages from CCTU. In practice, bring your beverages and then please make a small (it can be very tiny) donation to CCTU – and consider your beverage donated and bought back. Please also bring folding chairs as there may not be enough room at the picnic tables.
Special Group Activity (5pm Start) - Streamside Fly Fishing Seminar on Entomology & Matching the Hatch
Ascent Fly Fishing (@ascentflyfishing) founder, Aquatic Biologist and CCTU chapter member Peter Stitcher will conduct a condensed version of his Streamside Fly Fishing Seminar on Entomology & Matching the Hatch. Peter will conduct a quick bankside review a trout’s aquatic and terrestrial foods, their life cycles and defining characteristics, and fly patterns that match them. He will then lead the group in sampling invertebrates in the South Platte River located at the park and help identify the best fly matches in your fly box. Peter will also offer for sale the Ascent Fly Fishing Fly Fishing Entomology kit which includes…Nylon Match the Hatch Belt Pouch, Seine net, Sample Vial Kit, Magnifier & Hook Size Key, Stream Thermometer, Invertebrate Tweezers, and more.
If you want to participate you will need to get wet…likely a good thing given the potential August heat. You can wet wade or bring our waders…your choice.
Fishing is close by, right on the South Platte River…so feel free to bring your rod.
The Park closes at sundown…so you are welcome to stay and fish or visit as long as the light permits.
Reynolds’s Landing Location - Reynolds Landing address is located off Santa Fe, just a little north of Aspen Grove. Quick directions are (from C470) north on Santa Fe, proceed past Aspen Grove, turn left (west) on Brewery Lane, proceed past Breckenridge Brewery, road dead ends at the park.
NOTE – Given there was no Raffle Program this year we will not be announcing any Raffle program winners as has been done in the past.
Please RSVP below so we can get a rough expected headcount for the Picnic.

MINERAL PARK PROJECT - CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS
SATURDAY, AUG 14 - 9:30AM - 1:30PM
|
The Cutthroat Chapter is looking for volunteers on Saturday, August 14, to help with the revegetation of the Mineral Park Project above Alma. The major work on the site has been completed and it needs to have bristlecone pine seedlings, sedges, and willows planted. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own tools (spade-type shovels, picks, and trowels). The project is at an elevation of 11,500 feet, just below tree line. Come prepared to be away from your vehicle and exposed to variable high altitude weather. We plan to meet at the Alma town hall at 9:30 and we will arrange our transportation to the site. We anticipate about a 4 hour project and we will have bag lunches for the volunteers. Please RSVP to Richard Pilatzke at rhpiscator@aol.com or call him at 303-979-8425.

ALMA RIVERWALK PROJECT UPDATE
|
|
On July 23, 2021, three CCTU board members paid a visit to the Alma area. We were there to confer with representatives from National TU and USFS about a CCTU volunteer project that will be coming up very soon. Spoiler alert, mark Saturday, August 14, on your calendars to come help us near Alma on an abandoned mine reclamation effort (see separate Mineral Park Project event). Since we were in the neighborhood we stopped by to admire recent progress on the Alma River Walk. CCTU has contributed funding and volunteer time to this wonderful effort by the Town of Alma. Their goal is to conserve and protect a stretch ecologically important wetlands of the Middle Fork of the South Platte River that runs through the center of town. The River Walk will eventually include ADA accessible trails, educational opportunities, and fishing access, while shielding this sensitive headwater environment from development and abuse. Jara Johnson of the Alma Foundation gave us a tour of recent work done by the youth of the Southwest Conservation Corps. The young people are working on a trail spur leading to the interior of the River Walk property. The first part of the spur is roughed in and will be soon be finished in cinder fines. The second part of the spur will be a boardwalk that extends into the wetlands ending in a fishing/observation platform overlooking a beaver pond. This part of the spur has already been cleared of willows, the lumber has been obtained, and a contractor has been hired to start work soon. This entire spur with trail and boardwalk will be finished this summer. A new rock garden is coming along well, with native plants like currant and sedge providing both beauty and and educational opportunity. By fall we will should see the first couple of many interpretive signs and kiosks that will welcome and inform visitors. When you come up to volunteer with us on August 14, please take time afterwards and check out the River Walk!

COME FISH WITH US - AUGUST EVENT
AUGUST 20, 5-8PM, LAKE LEHOW
|
CCTU Come Fish With Us is back again on Friday, August 20, 5-8pm at Lake Lehow. Always great if you can RSVP to David Coward at dpcoward@hotmail.com, but given the lack of capacity constraints currently on the lake, you can also just show up that evening.
The Come Fish With Us program is designed for chapter members and non-members to explore local fisheries with experienced chapter members also there to answer questions, offer tips, and provide help on casting, fly selection, hooking, playing and landing fish. Lake Lehow is a private lake (Denver Water) that is heavily stocked with bass, panfish, and trout.
Lake Lehow can be entered from the east side of the Waterton Canyon Parking Lot. Wadsworth south to Waterton Road, left into the parking lot. Veer to the right as you enter (toward van/trailer parking) and drive east down the dirt road to the green gate in back. A CCTU representative will be at the gate at 5pm and for an additional 5-10 minutes. The gate chain will then be “soft locked” for any late arrivals. If you arrive after 5pm, please redo the chain “soft lock” before proceeding to the lake.

FORGING A FUTURE FOR FISH: TU'S NEW VISION
Chris Wood, TU President & CEO
Monday, August 16 – 6pm via Zoom
|
Join Chris Woods, President & CEO for National TU, for a lively discussion of where our organization is headed in the next five years. Hear about what we are doing – all of us, together – over the next five years to care for and recover our waters so our children can experience the joy of wild and native trout and salmon. By applying the best science to our work, and by inspiring younger, more diverse communities to join us, we will begin to turn around the prospects for trout and salmon populations across the country.
This event is open to all members and supporters, and we’re celebrating by giving away some TU swag to a few lucky attendees.
Go to the link below to sign up for the Zoom broadcast of this important meeting.

JULY MEETING PRESENTATION AVAILABLE ON CCTU YOUTUBE CHANNEL
|
|
Another excellent chapter meeting last night is now up on the CCTU YouTube channel. Noah Parker from Land of Enchantment Guides in the Santa Fe area gave a great presentation on “Fly Fishing Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado”. He hit both private and public water in multiple areas. Waters discussed included The Chama, Conejos, Navajo, Brazos and Upper Brazos, Los Pinos, San Juan, Valles Caldera, Rio Grande Pecos Rivers. Great info on locations and some excellent photography. Amazingly big fish. Good to hear about the excellent water flows this year as well as a lack of the type of crowding we experience on Front Range Waters (if you are willing to walk a bit). For more info on Land of Enchantment Guides, go to https://loeflyfishing.com/.

FLY OF THE MONTH - PSYCHO PRINCE
|
Not a new fly, as Mike Mercer first started tying it in 2011, the Psycho Prince has become one of the most popular “guide flies” in the west. The fly design is an amalgam of diverse materials that Mike used to design an impressionistic/attractor nymph, blending key properties he found successful in many other generic searching flies, especially the BH Prince. Our favorite colors are Caddis Green, Purple, Orange, Pink, and Blue…purple and blue are also killer Great Lakes steelhead colors. Video courtesy of InTheRiffle.com.
Hook – 2X long Nymph Hook 14-18
Bead – Tungsten, size to match hook

Tail – Brown Turkey or Goose biots
Carapace – Pheasant Tail or Turkey Tail

NEW READS & RE-READS
PHIL TEREYLA, FLYFISHER’S GUIDE TO COLORADO’S EASY ACCESS MOUNTAIN LAKES
|
|
Phil Tereyla, noted South Park guide, presented to CCTU last October with a fantastic discussion on Targeting Fall Trophy Brown Trout. Late this Spring, his latest book came out…FlyFisher’s Guide to Colorado’s Easy Access Mountain Lakes. The book covers over 60 mountain lakes in Colorado that are under three miles to access, and hits all the areas of the state. Long hikes are not necessarily required to get to alpine lakes with solid fishing for larger trout and multiple species. He shows where to catch three subspecies of Cutthroats, artic grayling, big brown trout, lake trout, rainbows, cuttbows, splake, tiger trout, tiger muske and more. He covers tributary streams, and reviews the seasonality and fly selection that will boost your chances of success in these easy-access alpine lakes.
