CELEBRATING CTE MONTH AT CLC THIS FEBRUARY
CLC supplies many workers in the Lake County workforce through its different Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. February is CTE Month, and CLC is taking the time to celebrate these impactful programs.

The upcoming Advanced Technology Center is going to be home to numerous CTE programs, including Welding and Fabrication and the new Industrial Technology program when the building opens this fall.

Many CTE programs at CLC have opportunities students to compete in SkillsUSA.

REAL-WORLD OPPORTUNITIES OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM
Opportunities are growing at CLC for students to compete in SkillsUSA, a national career and technical student organization that hosts competitions in a variety of fields of interest. Students have a chance to not only use the skills they've acquired in class in situations that simulate the work environment, but to also gain skills they may not be able to get in a classroom.

CLC students have been successful in recent competitions, with the team of Ben Otterbacher and Eduardo Zarinana finishing second nationally in Robotics Urban Search and Rescue: Explosive Ordnance Disposal competition.
PROFESSOR SELECTED FOR FULBRIGHT TO STUDY AFRICAN FILM
Film Studies professor Chris Cooling was selected to travel on a Fulbright trip to West Africa this summer to study film.

Cooling has hosted an international film series at CLC since 2009, but in that time, he's only shown two African films. That's changing this spring with four in his lineup.

Read about the film series and trip in this Daily Herald article.

SPOTLIGHT: BEVERLY PHELPS WINS COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDS
African American Student Outreach and Programs Coordinator Beverly Phelps was awarded two different honors this January for her ongoing community service work.

Phelps received the 2022 Community Service Award from the Kappa Chi Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and was also recognized by the Waukegan Township with the Drum Major award for being an influential leader in the community.

β€œI was shocked, but also humbled, when I heard I was receiving this award,” Phelps said. β€œI don’t do things for recognition. I do what I do because it’s my passion and my purpose.”
