Dear UC San Diego,

We hope this spring offers optimism and a sense of renewal on the horizon. As vaccine distribution continues to accelerate in San Diego, especially on campus, we are gearing up for a full return this coming fall.

Our center is embarking on an expansion phase, thanks to Joe and Clara Tsai who have gifted the 21st Century China Center with a large foundational donation. The gift will allow us to fund more cutting-edge research, convene more impactful policy discussions, widen our policy study agenda and support students and scholars to come to UC San Diego. We hope Joe and Clara’s generosity will catalyze more philanthropic investment in the center, enhancing its reputation as the global hub of China research, exchange and policy analysis. To serve our faculty, students and other constituencies better, we will also expand the team, starting with Lei’s full-time appointment as the So Family Executive Director of the center.

This spring, we are also excited to launch a new resident fellowship program with the generous support of the So Family, who are the center’s founders and long-time supporters. This program aims to bring renowned and experienced professionals from various fields to campus to engage our faculty and students. We are delighted to announce our inaugural fellow will be Jim Brown, a trusted diplomat and interpreter who has served seven U.S. presidents in key diplomatic interactions involving China for the past 40 years.

During winter and spring quarters, research and policy discussions have continued unabated at the center. We are pleased that the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation has awarded a new grant to Molly Roberts and Ruixue Jia to study the effects of parallel digital platforms on U.S.-China collaboration in scientific research. Our signature China Forum held a virtual session in March, and we plan to bring more spirited conversations on critical topics to the attention of the public and policymakers.

We are pleased to bring you more public webinars, essays and multimedia products in the spring. For students who are looking for support for research, the Ichimore research award is open for spring applications. This year’s China Focus essay contest, held in partnership with the 1990 Institute, will be announcing the winners soon.

We would like to leave you with a wonderful performance from world-renowned pipa virtuoso Wu Man, who recently dedicated this mandolin duo for our Center. It captures the spirit of cross-cultural collaboration which we hope to promote.

We encourage you to check out our events — from China’s economy, to its diplomacy, and U.S.-China relations. Stay tuned also for the China 360° bulletin, China Data Lab and China Focus blogs, China Throughlines webcast and the China 21 podcast.

With warm regards,

Susan Shirk, Chair, 21st Century China Center; and

Lei Guang, Director, 21st Century China Center
