The MFG Tools for Safe and Productive Operations tool kit condenses safety standards articulated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and includes best practices put forth by the State of Michigan and MMA’s diverse membership on topics ranging from decontamination, information technology, social distancing and virus mitigation to financial resources and supply chain management, training and communication, locating personal protective equipment (PPE), and legal and loss control services.

We have watched with awe as manufacturers all across the state have worked to pull themselves up in the face of this pandemic, but you don’t have to create a restart strategy on your own.  The resources available in this tool kit can offer solutions and viable partners for challenges you are going to face in the weeks and months ahead.

This evolving document will have new resources and guidelines added just as our situation surrounding COVID-19 and a safe and productive workplace evolves. If you have expertise or resources to share, contact MMA’s Delaney McKinley at 517-487-8530 or [email protected].

Learn How Work Share Can Help Your Company

Michigan’s Work Share program allows employers to put employees on a reduced work schedule and pay a portion of their wages, all while the employee collects partial unemployment benefits. Work Share can apply to current workers or to bring back employees that are currently on unemployment, helping employers to restart their business as workplace restrictions are lifted.

Join MMA on Friday, 5/15/20 at 10:00 a.m, for a webinar in partnership with the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) and Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) to help manufacturers better understand the mechanics and value of the newly expanded Work Share program.

Click here to join the Meeting on Friday, May 15, at 10:00 a.m.

In the face of the many challenges facing manufacturing employers, Work Share is a critical program that can help you manage payroll costs, control unemployment tax liability and ramp up production.

One Detroit PBS: What will it take to reopen factories in Michigan? • 5/8/20
Nolan Finley talks to President & CEO of the Michigan Manufacturers Association John Walsh about what re-opening factories during the pandemic actually looks like.
“I think we have to be realistic. Even if manufacturing were able to turn on like a light switch, it’s going to take a bit of time for demand to creep up and get back to that full employment.”

The Oakland Press: Auto manufacturers and suppliers prepare to reopen plants • 5/10/20
MMA’s John Walsh, along with Magna International, Ford, General Motors and the UAW, spoke on what manufacturers and suppliers should prepare for as businesses look to begin their restart efforts following Governor Whitmer’s latest executive order.
John Walsh said he's confident that manufacturers will be able to implement the proper protocols needed to comply with the governor's order, but added that the immediate availability of no-touch thermometers may be the "biggest impediment."

"We have had the opportunity to use CDC and OSHA guidelines, which are quite similar to what the governor is requesting in her executive order," he told The Oakland Press. "I think they are going to be ready. Some manufacturers that I've spoken with ordered (no-touch thermometers) and already have them in possession. (But for others) it might take a bit of time."
