Professor visits Finland for Fulbright Specialist project


Professor Peter Bobkowski recently completed a Fulbright Specialist project titled, “Disentangling Disinformation in Social Media” at Laurea University of Applied Sciences in Finland. Over the two-week visit, Bobkowski assisted colleagues with a grant-funded research project and led workshops for graduate students about identifying and combating the spread of misinformation and disinformation. Assistant Professor Judy Watts recently presented a review of media effects research on children at the Heartland Conference on Health Equity and Patient-Centered Care in Overland Park. The presentation was titled "A Brief Review of Race Portrayals in Children's Media" and provided an overview of race and ethnic representation in children's television, film and storybooks.

Students honored at Wooldridge Scholars dinner


The J-School hosted the 2022-23 class of Wooldridge Scholars at a dinner Sept. 14 in the Kansas Union. Students, faculty and staff gathered to celebrate and honor Roger Wooldridge, his family and the legacy of the Roger Wooldridge Memorial Scholarship. Special guests included Provost Barbara Bichelmeyer and Dale Seuferling, retired president of the KU Endowment Association. Pictured are 24 of the new and returning scholars. Become a Global or University Scholar! The Global and University Scholar programs are for highly motivated (3.5+ GPA) sophomores with an interest in international studies. Students may apply for either or both programs. Scholars enroll in a spring seminar and receive program-specific benefits and opportunities. Deadline to apply is Sept. 19.


The Wall Street Journal is now accepting applications for 2023 newsroom internships in the United States. Fourteen types of internship opportunities are available, including reporting, video, podcasting, graphics, audience engagement and more. Virtual info sessions are open to students on Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. and Sept. 26 at 1 p.m. Learn more here.


Registration is open for Spark KC 2022. The 9 a.m.-3 p.m. event on Sept. 23 at VMLY&R, 250 NW Richards Road, features guest speakers, panels and one-on-ones with top Kansas City advertising leaders. The Kansas City Area Development Center is bringing KC Heartland to the University of Kansas from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 27, at the KU Memorial Union. It’s an opportunity for students to chat one on one with young professionals living and working in Kansas City. Admission is free. Register here.


The Lewis Scholarship is a new scholarship program that will provide free housing and a monthly stipend to support student journalists of color who plan to intern at news media outlets in Washington, D.C., beginning in 2023. The Lewis Scholarship has an estimated value of $10,000 and will be awarded to one undergraduate student journalist of color each fall, spring and summer semester. The scholarship will provide a stipend of $1,000 per month and free housing provided through Washington Intern Student Housing for the duration of the student’s internship, usually four months. The J-School Career Fair is six weeks away! All students are welcome to attend from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 20 at Stauffer-Flint Hall. A professional photographer will take portraits from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Clarkson Gallery for students’ LinkedIn profiles.
