In 2017 we ran a successful bill through the legislature that states that before a civil action can be filed against you, you are allowed a certain amount of time to fix the problem, if one exists. I have included information about the law below.
Arizona Revised Statutes

June. Hot and getting hotter, dry, windy. The "Perfect Storm" for Wildfires in a Wild Land Urban interface community. Most fires in a Town like Cave Creek are human caused and this is one area where we can always improve.
There is a Town Ordinance covering many activities during Stage I and Stage II fire restriction periods and I believe the one that can make the most difference has to do with Construction Activity. Just last Month during the week of May 17th there was a fire in the County area North of Cave Creek at a home construction site. Fortunately it was controlled before it got out of hand. Had there been significant wind the outcome would have been much different.
When a Building Permit is issued in Cave Creek there is information on the Dangers of fire in an area like ours along with extra precautions that MUST be taken. I don't know what Maricopa County includes with their Permits but, I have asked our Building Official to send the County information on the precautions we are taking. Now if we could only get the State Government to let us regulate Consumer Fireworks on a local level again we could all be just a little bit safer from fire.
Evenings this Month are still very nice so come on out and enjoy all that our Town has to offer!
See you next Month.

Kraig Nelson, Cave Creek Museum Historian
Consider the following scenarios with the understanding the common denominator is Cave Creek, would you find this plausible? Here are the scenarios: the most significant Presidential scandal prior to Watergate known as the Teapot Dome Scandal; the first Cabinet member in American history sentenced to prison; the largest oil company in the world in the 1920s; the road that separates Beverly Hills and West Hollywood; some lyrics in the Beach Boys hit song Surfin’ USA; Pulitzer-prize winning author Upton Sinclair’s book Oil!; and finally, a 2007 Hollywood film called, There Will Be Blood. Let’s see if we can tie these disparate scenarios together.
The year 1877 was an important year for Cave Creek because the first two Anglos set up a Station where miners and ranchers could purchase supplies, it was called Cave Creek Station (near future Rancho Manana Golf Resort), Jeriah and Amanda Wood were the proprietors. About ten miles northeast from the Station, also in 1877, two friends were doing some prospecting on a small hill where a large deposit of gold was found. Richard Cramm and Edward L. Doheny called it the “Emerald Lode” and the small hill became known as Cramm Mountain. Prospector Cramm settled down near the mine but eighteen-year-old Doheny moved to Prescott, and on to New Mexico. By the time Doheny was thirty-six, he moved to Los Angeles to search for black gold which we call oil.
In 1892, Doheny drilled the first successful oil well in Los Angeles. Later, he drilled the first successful oil well in Mexico (Tampico); by 1916, it was the world’s largest producing oil well. By 1920, Mexico was the largest oil-producer in the world. Doheny created the Pan American Petroleum and Transport Company which he later sold to Standard Oil of Indiana. His net worth was over 100 million, about 1.5 billion in 2021 dollars. Mr. Doheny and his second wife, Carrie Estelle, were philanthropists in southern California which is why the Doheny name is pervasive in Los Angeles, Doheny Drive is a north-south thoroughfare separating Beverly Hills and West Hollywood. Doheny State Beach, in Dana Point, is mentioned by the Beach Boys in one of their songs.
The Teapot Dome Scandal besmirched the Warren Harding administration in 1922 and 1923, to the extent President Harding died from a probable stroke August 2, 1923. Calvin Coolidge became the 30th President of the United States. The scandal is a very complex situation which entailed Harding’s Secretary of Interior, Mr. Albert Fall (unbeknownst to President Harding), taking bribes and kickbacks from Mr. Doheny and Mr. Harry Sinclair of Mammoth Oil Company for the right to lease U.S. Navy oil reserves in Elk Hills, California and Teapot Dome (named for a rock formation), Wyoming. Doheny was acquitted of all charges twice, but Mr. Fall was fined and sentenced to one-year in prison for malfeasance in office. Mr. Sinclair served six months for jury tampering. Pulitzer Prize winning author, Upton Sinclair’s 1927 novel, Oil!, and the 2007 movie, There Will Be Blood, was based on the Teapot Dome Scandal.
Mr. Edward L. Doheny, successful Cave Creek prospector, died in Beverly Hills, September 8, 1935, he was 79.
