Scam Alerts and Tips - June 3, 2021
Hello Preventing Financial Scams Initiative Stakeholders,
We hope this message finds you well! The Community Foundation is now sending twice monthly Scam Alerts and Tips to protect our community.
Imposter Scams Continue
Our last edition covered imposter scams - a scammer pretends to be someone you trust to convince you to send them money. Here are two new imposter scams in our region.

NV Energy Scam Calls
NV Energy recently warned about a surge of scam calls demanding immediate payment. Scammers call and falsely warn that your power will be turned off if you do not pay immediately. They often ask for you to make a payment through Zelle, Venmo, and other platforms.

According to NV Energy: "We will never email, call or visit your home or business to demand immediate payment in any form and/or threaten immediate service disconnection. If you are facing disconnection, we will issue a 10-day notice directly on your bill, and will follow up with a 48-hour notice by mail."

If you have received a scam call, NV Energy asks you to report it by calling 775-834-7226. Read more.

PayPal Imposter Scam Reported in 89502:
A Reno resident recently reported a scam to the Better Business Bureau's (BBB) Scam Tracker:

"I received an e-mail from Pay Pal supposedly, saying thank you for your order and a purchase of $217.00. I contacted this fake number and told them I didn't have a Pay Pal account so they wanted me to provide my cell phone and credit card info associated with this fake Pay Pal account. That way they said they could refund my money. I didn't provide any info but told them I was contacting the Better Business Bureau since the e-mail showed they had a BBB rating of A+."

Remember, scammers pretend to have your best interest in mind. They claim to want to issue a refund, but only do so to get your personal information. If the service or company is legitimate they will already have your information.
