Principal Message
Westmoor Families,

Brrr...it's been a chilly week which means less time outdoors for recess but students have been flexible and making the most of the indoor recess. In Mr. Grigolo's classroom, a make-shift ping pong court was made so kids could continue to get some movement inside!!!
While the new school year is still several months away it's the time of year to prepare to welcome next year's kindergarten students. If you have a child that will be 5 years old on or before September 1, please contact the Westmoor office between February 1-7 to register. Additional registration information is located below.
Next week we continue with the winter benchmark assessments. Please look at the schedule below to see when your child is testing. These assessments are used along with classroom data to help ensure students are on track and assist teachers in differentiating instruction. If you have any questions don't hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher.

Have a wonderful weekend!
-Mary

Kindergarten Spring Sharing and 5th Grade Musical Updates:
We are pleased to share that kindergarten and 5th-grade students will participate in a music performance this spring! Due to ongoing COVID restrictions, things will look a little different this year, but we are happy to still offer performance experiences for the students.

Fifth graders will perform a modified musical at the end of April. More information will be shared about the date of the performances as well as whether it will be a live audience or recorded.

Kindergarteners will share their learning as they have in the past few years with a performance of classroom activities. We will plan to record their activities and share a link to the recording for our community to enjoy.
January/February MAP Assessments
Students grades 2-5 will be assessed throughout the month of January and February. Please see below for the specific assessments and dates.

Remote Learning During Quarantine *Repeat Information*
The Illinois State Board of Education requires districts to provide remote instruction for students who are under a quarantine order by a local public health department or the Illinois Department of Public Health.

District 28 will provide remote learning for our students who are required to quarantine due to a positive COVID-19 test or if they are determined to be a close contact. Students absent for required quarantine after travel will also be eligible. Students will not be eligible for remote learning during travel or for other illnesses. Students who must be absent for extended periods of time (ex. recovering from surgery) will be considered on a case-by-case basis. State law no longer allows the option for full-time remote learning similar to last year’s Remote Learning Academy.

Teachers may need 24 - 36 hours after receiving notification of quarantined students to send home materials and devices, and communicate meeting schedules to parents.

Tech Help During Quarantine Instruction
There are 2 helpful resources for parents when iPad technology questions arise during quarantine instruction:
  1. Parent Tech Help Website: This site has basic troubleshooting videos and resources to commonly asked questions.
  2. Parent Tech Help Form: Complete this form to have a member of our tech staff contact you to resolve technology issues with the iPad.
Specific questions about instruction, assignments, and schedules should be directed to your child's teachers.
Snow & Cold Weather are here!
Please make sure your child has dressed appropriately for the weather. The District 28 weather policy is: Students go outside for recess mid-morning and lunch recess every day as long as the "feels like" temperature is above 10 degrees. There are some days in the morning that it will not be warm enough to be outside but by lunch recess, it will have warmed up. Please send your student daily with the items they will need throughout the day. Once there is snow, students must have boots, snow pants, and gloves to be allowed to play in the snow.

Online kindergarten registration Feb. 1-6

Kindergarten registration will be conducted online February 1-6, 2022 for the 2022-23 school year for all children who will be 5 years old by September 1. The registration link will be live beginning at 8 a.m. Feb. 1 and stay open through Sunday, Feb. 6.

This is the first step in the registration process for kindergarten, which is to establish residency. In order for your student to be placed in a class, you will complete enrollment in April when fees will be collected.

New! COVID Protocol Flowchart
The updated guidance published by the Illinois Department of Public Health for COVID-19 positive cases (isolation) and close contacts (quarantine) has added another layer of complexity. We've created a flowchart to help parents and staff understand What to do if their child has a positive case or is a close contact. This is posted on our website under COVID Information. There is also a chart to help you determine when your child can return to school.

COVID Dashboard
The district is maintaining a COVID dashboard to publish more detailed information on positive cases and student quarantines for close contact and travel. The dashboard is updated daily with newly reported positive cases of both students and staff as well as student quarantine daily averages.
Participate in 5Essentials Survey
The Illinois 5Essentials Survey of staff, students, and parents is being conducted January 11 through March 11. This is the tenth statewide survey of school climate and learning conditions administered by the Illinois State Board of Education. The survey is a unique opportunity for students, teachers and parents to help provide input on a school’s organizational culture in measuring five ‘essentials’ critical for school success:
·      Effective Leaders
·      Collaborative Teachers
·      Involved Families
·      Supportive Environment
·      Ambitious Instruction
Your participation in the parent portion of the survey will help us understand your perspective and guide improvement. Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child.
If at least 20 percent of parents complete this survey, a parent supplement report will also be generated for administrative review. The parent data will not be reported on the State Report Card. The survey is open through March 11, 2022. Follow the survey link and select the appropriate school to begin.
You can view previous reports on the Illinois School Report Card under School Environment.
