Opening Message

Welcome OOMPH Students! Happy Native American & Indigenous Peoples Heritage Month! I cannot believe we are in November already. I don’t know about you, but I am counting down the days until winter break. With the end of the semester underway, this could be a stressful time of year. After enjoying an extra hour of sleep, I woke up this morning instead of jumping on my computer; I decided to take 7 minutes to listen to Jay Shetty, Daily with Jay on the Calm app. Today’s message was about “Be Here Wow” and he shared a famous quote about Albert Einstein “ There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” The miracle that comes to mind is the birth of my youngest Sophia Ruth who just celebrated her first birthday on November 3, 2022, who was born 24 weeks (1lb 09 ozs). As I sat in the NICU holding her for 104 days, I was watching a true miracle before my eyes. Each day I am reminded how precious this life is watching her grow. I will be honest there are some days just getting my 4th grader off to school on time can be a miracle. As we enter the holiday season and end of fall semester, remember to breathe and to take time to embrace the miracle.

Monthly Observances - Native American & Indigenous Peoples Heritage Month

In 1992, Berkeley became the first city to celebrate Indigenous People's Day. It was created to protest the 500th anniversary of Columbus’ arrival. Participate by reading one of the books on this list from the UC Berkeley library. Another recommendation is the story collection The Beadworkers by UC Berkeley Ethnic Studies Associate Professor Beth Piatote.
