36th Annual Arbor Day is at Montie Beach Park!
Come celebrate Arbor Day this Saturday by planting a tree at Montie Beach Park. Following the ceremony, partners and volunteers will plant native trees throughout the park.

Canal Street Sidewalk Improvements Begin Jan 24th
Council Member Cisneros' investment of $200,000 from Council District Service funds will improve access and safety for pedestrians along the Canal Street bus corridor in Second Ward. The project is in partnership with METRO and Harris County Precinct Two. Construction begins January 24th and is slated to end by March 25, 2022, improving sidewalks on Canal St. from Kendall St. to Super St.
2100 Memorial Senior Living Complex Update
Structural demolition of 2100 Memorial is nearing completion. The old building is scheduled to be entirely down by the first week of February. The new senior housing complex to replace it will then be constructed on the site. More information about the project will be provided at the virtual, 2022 Annual Meeting of the Old Sixth Ward Neighborhood Association.

New Updates to Animal Welfare Code
At the January 19th session, Houston City Council approved updates to Houston's animal welfare ordinance. The changes, which include measures to combat "puppy mills" and mandatory microchipping, were supported by BARC and are intended to improve animal welfare throughout the City. 2022 Homeless Count & Survey: January 24-27
The Coalition for the Homeless conducts an annual Homeless Count & Survey in order to better understand the needs of unhoused populations in Houston and surrounding counties. The unsheltered portion of the count will occur from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. from January 25th through January 27th. WIC Benefits Extended
The Houston Health Department’s Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program will offer increased monthly benefits through March 31, 2022. To register for WIC, schedule an appointment at 832-393-5427 or visit the Houston Health Department WIC webpage for more information.
Child Care Assistance Available for Service Industry Workers
The Service Industry Recovery Child Care (SIR) program provides direct payments to childcare providers for eligible parents working in the service industry. If eligible, parents can receive up to 12 months of child care assistance. Parents working in arts, entertainment and recreation, accommodations, food services and retail trade are eligible to apply. Family Fun Day
Join the fun at Family Fun Day this Saturday at Proctor Plaza Park. Family Fun Days are open to the public and occur on the 4th Saturday of every month. The Proctor Plaza Park Advisory Council (PAC) will be meeting in the community center this month to discuss fundraising efforts.

HPD Presentation on Human Trafficking
Continuing its campaign for Human Trafficking Awareness Month, the Houston Police Department will present on the subject of human trafficking to City Council's Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee on Thursday, January 20th at 2:00pm. Use this link to access the full presentation.

Leadership Training: Apply for Complete Community University
Strengthen your leadership skills by participating in the Winter 2022 session of Complete Community University (CCU). CCU coaches emerging leaders on civic engagement techniques.
