SMUD Incentive
SMUD’ Charge@Home incentive program began on December 8 and lasts until February 28, 2022. SMUD residential customers who have purchased or leased a new or used EV may quality for up to $500 for the purchase of a Level 2 charger and up to $500 for installation by a licensed electrician.

Geotab Battery Degradation Tool
Geotab has aggregated data from over 6,000 EVs comprised of 21 models to understand battery degradation. Their data indicates an overall rate of just over 2% per year, with somewhat higher rates for vehicles that use a lot of DCFC and vehicles located in hot areas

Hydrogen Powered Light Rail Demo
The first zero-emission, hydrogen-powered light rail vehicle in North America was demonstrated in Santa Cruz. The light rail vehicles are manufactured by TIG/M under the name “Coast Futura” in Louisiana, and this first demonstration placed the vehicle into full-time service for several days running between Watsonville and Santa Cruz.

Bollinger Withdraws from the Market
Bollinger has announced that they are indefinitely postponing building EVs (the B1 SUV and the B2 pickup) in order to focus on electric vehicle components. Bollinger will refund the deposits they received.

Consumer Reports Ranks EV SUVs Unreliable
In their November issue, “Consumer Reports” has indicated that SUV EVs are much less reliable than similar make/model/year IC vehicles. The main problems noted were electronics, fit & finish items, in-car electronics and HVAC.

Chevy Silverado EV
Chevy is taking deposits for the introduction of the Silverado EV pickup, due to be introduced in 2024 with a 400 mile range, “Work Truck” and “Upgrade” models, up to 664hp & 780 lb-ft of torque, 10,000 lb towing capacity, 1,300 lb payload capacity and DCFC up to 350kW.

Tesla Repairs
Tesla owners love their cars, but Tesla is famous for having huge repair bills and there are very few alternatives to using Tesla shops to make repairs. One Tesla owner in New Jersey was quoted $16,000 and saved $15,300 on battery cooling system repairs at the Electrical Garage using standard plumbing components. A Tesla owner in Finland was quoted $22,000 for a repair and decided to use 60 sticks of dynamite to express his frustration!

EV Battery Prices
The price of EV batteries is likely to rise significantly in 2022 due to the dramatic jump in the costs of the rare earth metals necessary for their manufacture. Lithium is up 500%, cobalt is up 100% and nickel is up 15%. Part of the problem is growing demand, and part is the concentration of these resources under Chinese ownership, with China giving first priority to their own EV production.
