A message from our city councilperson
I recently wrote to notes to St. James’ city councilperson, Andrew Johnson. One made our case for dealing with our police department, including the original intent of policing as stated by Robert Peel in early 19th century England. The second was a note telling Mr. Johnson about our departure from the Parkway. This is the very kind note that I received:
Reverend Dr. Heisley,
Thank you for your kind email regarding MPD, which had helpful thoughts and the article on Peel was also very interesting. Thank you as well for the notice regarding the departure of the building. This is of course very sad news to hear, but I understand the decision was made with great care. I wish you the best on the journey ahead.
God bless you all,
Andrew Johnson

Thinking of you all!
Beloved friends and family of the now former St. James on the Parkway,

Grace and peace to you! I write having just learned of your unanimous vote to consolidate with St. Luke's. I grieve the loss of a church that was so pivotal in my family's faith journey. However, I am filled with excitement and anticipation for you as you embark on this new thing that God is doing. Although we are separated by miles and years (I have not been back to Minneapolis since my ordination in 2011) I have followed your journey over the last few years from afar, praying with you and for you as tough questions were asked, and as St. James often faced even tougher circumstances. Above all, I prayed with all of you, as you tried to discern what the Spirit was calling you to do. I am grateful for the hard work of so many.

Janine and I have very fond memories of our time there: it was in your midst that Candace and Liam were welcomed into the church, being baptized and nourished in their faith. It was there that I first perceived that God was calling me to do something different with my life. Above all, I remember so many good times: Sunday’s filled with music, with worship, with Jesus. I remember parish work days, although I think that time has eased the memory of the sore muscles those days wrought. I remember joyous occasions, and others filled with sorrow. I learned so many things about church, about faith, and about Jesus from you. These things daily impact my ministry here in New Jersey. Thank you for all that you have done for us, for Minneapolis, for the world! But today, I don't write to dwell on the past, for I know that the church is not a building, a church is her people. So today, I write to congratulate you on your decision and your new way forward. Please know of my unceasing prayers for you, and for this new community you are forming. I know that the Holy Spirit has great plans for you and for South Minneapolis.

May God Bless your new beginnings!

Heritage Committee Meets
St. James’ Heritage Committee (Greg Fedio, Louis Hoffman, Jeanne Labore, and Fr. William) has met and understands that because of our current restrictions we cannot meet at St. James or anywhere else for any sort of gathering in the foreseeable future. The group pledges to keep its eye on what is going on and to act as soon as it is possible to activate plans it has made for getting the congregation together. It could well be that this will take place as a reunion in the latter months of this year. We just don’t know.

You should also be aware that Bishop Loya this week reaffirmed that groups of 10 or less are permitted to enter church buildings for the purposes of recording worship for later dissemination only. No other gatherings are to be held until further notice.

Pray for the health of St. James, St. Luke’s, and all of us who live in viral times.
Pledges During This Time
During this time of Zoom worship, you can mail in your pledge or stop by the church and drop it in an envelope through the mail slot at the 33rd Ave/Playground entrance. John Heintz is regularly checking the mail and making deposits.
