Day 24: To The Philippines for Recycled
Flip Flop Door Mats

Destination:   The Philippines
The Philippines, named in 1542 for Prince Philip of Spain, is an island country of Southeast Asia in the western Pacific Ocean. It is an archipelago consisting of some 7,100 islands and islets lying about 500 miles off the coast of Vietnam. Manila is the capital. Only about 7% of the islands are larger than one square mile and only one-third are named. Most of the year is hot and humid with typhoons common from June to September.

Fun Facts:
The yo-yo had its beginnings as an ancient Filipino studded hunting weapon attached to a 20-foot rope. The modern yo-yo was invented by a Filipino American, and its name yóyo comes from the Filipino language Ilocano and means "come back."

Also:  The antibiotic erythromycin was invented by Filipino Dr. Abelardo Aguilar in 1949. Erythromycin is used for people who are allergic to penicillin and has saved millions of lives.

Surplus foam rubber from the  production of flip flop sandals is used to create these durable door and floor mats instead of heading to the landfill.

The mats are constructed by hand using galvanized metal wire. No two are alike.

Rolling out the Welcome Mat - After almost two months of having our store closed in Brookside, we will
re-open tomorrow (Friday, May 15) from 11 am to 5 pm.  We've missed our community and our daily celebrations of all the little things and the milestones. We love serving you, seeing you laugh and smile, and hearing your stories.

We're ready to welcome you but there will be noticeable changes both visually and with procedures. In every case, we'll be taking precautions for the health and safety of our employees, our customers and our community. We're doing our part to make the in-store experience as safe as possible for everyone, and we need your help to make our continued opening possible.

I know this is long. Please read it all because we want to make your first experience back in our store pleasant and comfortable.  O ur doors will open for a limited number of customers at a time. We will welcome 6 at a time. We'll greet you at the door. If there are already 6 shoppers in the store, we'll take down your name and phone number. You are welcome to wait outside on one of the benches or in your car. You will be called in order of arrival and welcomed into the store. We will have hand sanitizer right inside our door and will require its use before you shop.

We'll wear masks to protect you, and ask that you wear masks to protect us.  I f you forget yours, we'll have disposable face coverings available. It is a simple but wonderful way to honor each other and our individual health journeys.

We will have reminders in the store about safe social distancing and directions on how to gather your selections and use the dressing rooms. Please note that our restroom will be unavailable.

Our store will be open Friday through Sunday and then closed Monday and Tuesday of next week. All of our shopping hours are listed below my signature.

This new journey for all of us will no doubt have more twists and turns. We are grateful for your support and understanding and ask for your patience as we shop together but differently.

For those of you who cannot or choose not to shop in our Brookside store right now, we thank you for your continued online shopping support. We plan to continue our global "journeys" with additions to our online store. Many of you have asked us for years to have a way to shop when you can't make it to KC. We don't intend to stop now.

And I can't say it enough times -  YOU are an important part of what makes World's Window so special!  THANK YOU!
