Kings Board of Education Special Meeting

The Kings Board of Education has placed a 6.4mill Operating Levy on the November 8, 2022, ballot. This is an important ballot issue for the Kings Local School District. Currently, the District is under fiscal oversight by the Ohio Department of Education due to our declining fund balance.

The levy will generate $7.5 million per year to support the day-to-day operations of the District. It will cost the Kings taxpayer $18.67 per month for every $100,000 of true home value.

Please join us for a Special Meeting of the Kings Board of Education on Monday, October 10, at 6:30 p.m. in the Kings High School Auditorium. The Kings Administration will be presenting to the Board and Kings families and community members information regarding the levy and how the outcome of the election may impact the student experience at Kings.

Last week we told you about how much Kings receives in State funding per student, this week we would like to give our community details on the amount of state revenue we have received since the passage of the last levy.

As we told you previously, Kings receives only 17% of the budget as revenue from the State of Ohio, leaving the District to ask taxpayers to fund our schools. The District has seen an increase in expenditures such as payroll/benefits, school services, equipment, and supplies.

Since the last Operating Levy in 2016, Kings revenue has grown by 3% a year. Additionally, enrollment has grown 14% from 2016 to 2022. Kings per student cost has increased less than the state average since 2018 while receiving the lowest state funding per student in Warren County.

The 6.4 mill levy will bring $7.5 million per year to the District, which will cost the $224 per year per $100,000 of true home value. The average home in Kings is $250,000. The tax rate will decrease over time if home values continue to rise in the Kings District.

Community members are encouraged to visit our Levy FAQ page to learn more. We will continue to add questions to this page as we receive them.

If you would like to learn more about the Operating Levy, please contact Kings Treasurer Mike Morrow at mmorrow@kingslocal.net

2022 Homecoming Festivities

What a night it was in Kings Mills on Friday, September 30. The weather was beautiful and the streets of Kings Mills were packed with kids and adults alike to watch the Kings Homecoming parade.

The Kings Education Association hosted its first Homecoming Block Party on the practice fields by Kings High School. The community enjoyed music, face painting, the dunk tank, and inflatables. KEA President Sam Mizener wants to thank the Ohio Education Association which awarded KEA with a $2,400 grant to defray the costs of the Block Party.

Check out the video below from the parade and block party.

Alumni Update

Kings Graduate Anna Ventre (Class of 2014) returned to Kings High School this week as a guest speaker in Kelly Shields' Advanced Placement Digital Media Arts classes.

Anna, a graduate of Ohio University Scripps College of Visual Communications is working in Columbus as a freelance photo stylist. She is an alumnus of the KHS DMA program where a project that she created in 2013 still hangs on the classroom wall.

Anna spent some time after graduation in Los Angeles working for large corporations in the photography business. She is hoping to become a Creative Director. She explained to the DMA students that you need to have technical skills and business and marketing skills in order to freelance. You also have to make connections in the industry and be persistent. She has traveled around the world and sells photographs that she has taken as a part of her business.

Mrs. Shields has a great relationship with Anna, who, while in high school, spent three periods a day with her. She said, It is so wonderful to make connections with former students I have had over the past 15 years, to see how they have grown up and become successful.”

Free and Reduced Lunch

Dear Parents,

For the past two years, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has provided waivers to Child Nutrition Programs across the United States, allowing these programs to offer all students breakfast and lunch meals at no charge, regardless of income status. This waiver has expired. To be eligible for meal assistance, families must complete an application.

Also, for families that had an application on file for the 2021-2022 school year, this application expired on Monday, September 26th. A new application must be submitted every school year. If families have not reapplied, they must complete an application as soon as possible to restore this service for free or reduced meals.

We encourage all families to complete a Free/Reduced Meal Application so the student’s eligibility can be evaluated based on the program guidelines. If applications are needed in an alternative language, this can be provided, please contact your child's school. Students will be charged full price for meals until a Free/Reduced Meal is processed and the eligibility status of the student is determined.

Please click on this link below to complete your application today!

Time to Order KHS Yearbooks

Now is the time to order your 2022-2023 Yearbook! We've made ordering as easy as possible. Just go to yearbookforever.com and put in Kings High School.

We've also added a ship-to-home option, so you won't even have to worry about forgetting to pick it up. These make great holiday gifts!

We now also have a QR code to make ordering even easier.

Digital Flyers

In an effort to be "green," the District does not send paper flyers home. We use a platform called Peachjar that houses flyers of community programs and resources.

Parents receive approved flyers via email, and they are posted on our digital flyerboard for easy retrieval. Any organization can distribute information to our community by creating an account!
