County Shelter-in-Place Order Extended Through May 31

The County Health Officer's Shelter-in-Place Order, which was set to expire on May 3, has been extended to May 31, 2020 by order of the Health Officer of the County of San Mateo. This new Order will supersede the previous order. View the press release here

What are some of the significant changes?

  • Certain outdoor businesses can begin operating again, and people can visit those businesses to perform work or obtain goods, services, or supplies. This includes wholesale and retail nurseries, landscapers, gardeners, and other businesses that primarily provide outdoor services as set forth in the Order.
  • Construction projects will be allowed to resume as long as the project complies with safety protocols included with the order. Click here to view the "Small Construction Safety Protocol". Click here to view the "Large Construction Safety Protocol".
  • Real estate transactions can now resume, but with continued restrictions on open houses and limitations on in-person viewings.
  • Outdoor recreation has expanded to "within 10 miles of a person’s residence". It was formerly 5 miles.
  • Some County parks and parking lots will reopen on Monday, May 4. They will not be open this weekend.

What has NOT changed?

  • Restaurants, cafes, and bars must remained closed to dine-in service, even if they have outdoor seating.
  • Outdoor recreational facilities that involve shared equipment or physical contact, like basketball and tennis courts, remain closed. Use of certain outdoor recreational areas and facilities (that are high-touch or encourage gathering), such as playgrounds, gym equipment, climbing walls, picnic areas, dog parks, pools, spas, and barbecue areas are prohibited outside of residences.

During work activity, please do not video, photograph, or speak to the work crews. If you want to speak to someone on-site, please speak to the City Parks staff or the CAL FIRE Captain. You may also contact Richard Holtz at rholtz@burlingame.org for more information. Thank you for your understanding as we work to improve the safety of Mills Canyon.
Burlingame's Business Outreach Initiative

Recently, the City developed a Business Outreach Project to prepare the business community for the opening of the San Mateo County Strong Fund and Burlingame small business grant programs.

City staff reached out to 340 retail, restaurant, and personal services businesses in Burlingame to information them about the upcoming San Mateo County Strong Fund and the Burlingame Back in Business Grant Program. Staff also gave information about the Facebook and Salesforce small business grant programs as well as the potential for additional federal funding.

For questions about these programs, visit the City's website, or contact Economic Development and Housing Specialist Joseph Sanfilippo at jsanfilipp@burlingame.org, or 650-558-7264.

Used Gloves and Masks Go in the Trash

Used gloves, masks, or other personal protective equipment (PPE) should be thrown in the garbage. Do not discard your used PPE on the sidewalk or street for someone else to pick up. We’re all in this together! Properly disposing of your PPEs is just one small gesture you can make to keep our community clean and safe.

Need tips on safely removing your used gloves?

  1. Pinch the outside of the glove about an inch or two down from the top edge inside the wrist.
  2. Peel downwards, away from the wrist, turning the glove inside out
  3. Pull the glove away until it’s removed from the hand. Hold the inside-out glove with the gloved hand.
  4. With your gloveless hand, slide your fingers under the wrist of the glove, do not touch the outside surface of the glove.
  5. Repeat step 3. Peel downwards, away from the wrist, turning the glove inside out.
  6. Continue pulling the glove down and over the first glove. This ensures that both gloves are inside out, one glove enveloped inside the other, with no contaminants on the bare hands.
  7. Dispose of the gloves in a garbage bin.
Climate Series
Where We Build Is Important

About half of Burlingame's residents live within a half mile of a BART, Caltrain, or bus station. Most residents are also within a half mile of a grocery store and business district. These facts help make Burlingame a desirable pedestrian and transit-friendly city with good access to transit, jobs, and amenities. These facts also greatly influence Burlingame's transportation emissions.

Fifty percent of Burlingame's greenhouse gas emissions come from transportation, mostly vehicle exhaust. The less people drive and the more they choose to walk, bike, take transit, or telecommute the more they can significantly decrease greenhouse gas emissions.

Burlingame’s Climate Action Plan (CAP) contains three measures to make the city more pedestrian, bicycle, and transit friendly for residents and workers.

  • Measure 1, Mixed Use Development. Promote high density development with a mix of uses near transit stations and stops. (Estimated emission reduction by 2030 = 166 tons of GHG)

  • Measure 2, Transportation Demand Management (TDM). Require that all new, major development projects include a TDM plan to reduce vehicle trips such as, shuttles, transit passes, and telecommuting options. (Estimated emission reduction by 2030 = 4,563 tons of GHG)

  • Measure 3, Complete Streets. Improve the street network for pedestrian and bicycle access and prepare and implement a Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan. (Estimated emission reduction by 2030 = 5,488 tons of GHG)
