In Solidarity for Equality
Vision 2020, as a national coalition dedicated to women's equality, shares the sorrow and anger flowing from recent violence against black Americans. The murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, among numerous others, are only the latest chapter in the crushing history of systemic racism, inequality and injustice in the United States.

We stand with black Americans in demanding justice and accountability at this tumultuous time in our nation, and in saying enough is enough.
We remember too well that in the original document stating the promise of our democracy, “We, the People” left out people of color and women – over half the U.S. population. While hard-fought battles have brought progress over the centuries, it remains a broken promise.

Racism, sexism and other forms of discrimination persist through the overt and covert actions of individuals and institutions that abuse their power, and through the silent witness of bystanders. We all must redouble our efforts to speak up and confront these societal ills at every turn.

At Vision 2020, we believe equality sustains a just and fair society. In our mission and programs, we are dedicated to finishing the unfinished business of equality for all women. But we must also work for the equality of all people without regard to social identifiers often used to divide society.

We applaud the activism of peaceful public protests. We also appeal to everyone who wants positive social change: Please vote. Not only in presidential elections. Vote in local and state elections. Local officials have the most power to effect social change.

Finally, join with and support organizations that are working for equality for all. Together we can – and will – do what must be done to change the systems that perpetuate racism, injustice and inequality in all forms.

Philadelphia Eagles to Join in Toast to Tenacity

Vision 2020 is close to finalizing a new schedule for our  Women 100 19th Amendment centennial events and will kick off the event series with  Toast to Tenacity®  on August 26. The Toast will be a hybrid virtual event of live streaming and pre-recorded presentations, tributes, and performances.

We are delighted to announce that the Philadelphia Eagles are a Proud Partner in our programming. This year also marks the centennial of the National Football League, so there is great symbolism in their sharing in our celebration.

Global Philadelphia Asks Leaders for Advice

As part of its promotion of gender equality during World Heritage Week in May, Global Philadelphia asked 12 women leaders – including Dianne Semingson , co-chair of the Women 100 Advisory Committee, and Lynn Yeakel, president of Vision 2020  – what advice they would give to the next generation of women leaders.
Dianne (left) said: "Let's break the record for women voting in 2020! There is no better way to increase the power of women's voices in decisions that affect society and to honor the suffragists who won the fight for women's right to vote 100 years ago. Shape the future. Register and vote."

Lynn said: "Vision 2020's Women 100 National Celebration commemorates the 100th anniversary of American women's voting rights in 2020. We are proud to be headquartered at Drexel University in Philadelphia, known this year as the City of Sisterly Love. Philadelphia is a home of women's history and I encourage new generations of women leaders here to continue making history – with HERstory!"
WHYY Spots Feature Pioneering Women Like Billie Jean King
Philadelphia’s local NPR station WHYY continues with its weekly 60-second spots featuring women and girls who have been pioneers for progress in many different fields.

This week's pioneer is Billie Jean King (right). Listen to the one-minute podcast about her life and impact, hosted by WHYY's Marty Moss-Coane.

The radio spots draw attention to a century of progress since women won the right to vote and the unfinished business of women’s equality.

WHYY, a Women 100 Proud Partner, is airing 52 episodes in 2020 as part of the Women 100 celebration. Check out the series.

Empowering Thought of the Month
What If 2020 Isn't Canceled?
Leslie Dwight (right) posted this thought on her Instagram page June 3 and it went viral, leading to interviews by media as widely divergent as NBC's Today Show and Fox News.

Her poem counters a narrative on social media about 2020 being canceled by the combined forces of pandemic, unemployment and civil unrest.

She told Today her hope is: “Now we can come together and create change so in five years we look back and say that year wasn't canceled. It was actually revolutionary.”

Leslie, 23, is co-founder and creative director of Strand Social.
