Employee Spotlight: Meet Robin Sanders.
Crew Leader & Dedicated Public Servant

It's hard to picture Cornelius without seeing neatly kept grass, happy families strolling down sidewalks, and big smiles waiting to greet you.

For the first two you can thank Public Works. For all three, thank Robin Sanders.

He's been with the Town for over 30 years and is currently a Crew Leader. He oversees the members of our Public Works Department who keep the Town looking top-notch, and he's not afraid of jumping in to lend a hand.

Robin describes himself as normal guy, but we'd have to disagree. His work ethic, dedication, and humility make him an above-average member of our team and one of the best parts of our Town.

More About Robin

Robin was born in Upstate New York and moved to North Carolina as a child. He's been happily married for 25 years and is a proud uncle to more nieces and nephews than he can count. He's also an extra-proud great-uncle to one great-niece and one great-nephew.
He first started with the Town after a friend got him a job as a laborer for Public Works. He was promoted to Crew Leader in 1996. Robin says the best parts of his job are working with amazing people and keeping residents happy. He loves when his team's hard work is noticed by residents and is grateful for all of the thanks they receive.

The past year has presented so many challenges for each of us, but Public Works refused to let these challenges keep them from getting their work done. Robin and his crew have been going since the start, following masking and distancing guidelines to keep themselves and each other safe. They even took it upon themselves to collect yard waste when the Town's previous provider stopped. Because of their hard work, trash, recycling, and yard waste collection never missed a beat.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Robin and his wife were not able to travel quite as much as they used to. They look forward to being able to go on cruises again, take their annual trip to Topsail Beach, and hopefully return to New York to visit Robin's family.

We are so thankful for Robin and his years of service to our Town. Thank you from all of us here at the Town, and from all of the residents you've done so much for!
Reminder: Recycling Changes Begin June 1
The Town and Waste Pro will be transitioning to alternating collection weeks beginning on June 1.

Recycling collection will be split into “red” and “blue” weeks. Blue will be the first split collection week. Red week residents will experience no change.

Waste Pro will be mailing calendars and postcards with each unit’s designated week. Keep an eye on your mailbox for these materials.

There will be no change to trash and yard waste collection.

The Results Are In!

Thank you to everyone who submitted a response to the Town's Budget Survey. Using your responses, the Town has worked to create a budget proposal that reflects some of your top concerns.

At our next Coffee Chat, you'll hear highlights from Town Manager Grant's budget recommendation, as well as a transportation update and the latest on the county's COVID-19 situation.
National Bike Month
Bike Month is great if you're an avid cyclist, but what if you're a driver or pedestrian? Don't worry, we've come up with a few ways for you to join in on the fun!

For Drivers:
  • Go slow. Low speed limits are an indicator of pedestrian and cyclist-dense areas. Be on the lookout, especially near crosswalk, bike lanes, and turns.

  • Don't drive distracted, your phone can wait.

For Pedestrians:
  • Use crosswalks when available. Make sure drivers see you and are slowing down before you start to cross.

  • Cross quickly, and don't be distracted. Giving your full attention to your surrounding is the best way to stay safe. If you're using headphones, keep the volume low enough to hear someone or something approaching.

  • Be visible. Wear bright colors and reflective materials. Carry a light with you when walking or running at night.

Mayor For The Day
Meet Aspen Stallings.

She's a 4th grade student at J.V. Washam Elementary, and on May 17 she was Mayor of Cornelius.

Aspen was nominated Mayor For The Day after raising money for a school fundraiser.

She spent the day touring the Police and Fire Departments and even opened the Town Board Meeting! There, she was joined by her parents and grandparents.

Congratulations, Aspen!
