"Outside the Box"  exhibition at PointBank Black Box Theater
May 12 - August 11:  Mike Strecher

Denton Community Theater (DCT) will be honoring long-time employee and volunteer Mike Strecher with a reception on June 3, 5:30 - 7:30 at the POINTBank Black Box Theater. Mike is not only a set-builder, an actor, but he is also a painter, and a collection of his paintings is currently on exhibit in the lobby of the Black Box through August 11. Mike is also a member of Visual Arts Society of Texas (VAST), which co-sponsors the exhibit with DCT.

Mike Strecher has been a part of the theater scene in Denton since 1999 and has played many roles at the Campus Theater. For the past ten years, he has served as Facilities Director at the Campus Theater. Mike's resume also includes book clerk, beer and wine salesman, commercial fisherman, carpenter, and sprout farmer.

Mike received a BFA in Drawing and Painting from Sam Houston State University in 1980. He states that "he reads like a fiend, mostly mysteries, and at least attempts the New York Times crossword puzzle on a daily basis."  He lives with his son Jackson in Denton, and says that "he is blessed with an amazing and remarkable family, and true, honest, and beautiful friends.

Mike Stretcher's Artist Statement: "After years of pondering and discovery, trying to figure out what it is that I am doing or mean, I know it is not random because I am always influencing me, but really when I draw or paint, things just come spewing out of me.  Not sure if out of my brain or heart or soul. Definitely inspired by my years at sea. Nature and survival are common themes. They usually begin with a single color, dark or light, and action and rhythm. It is always a matter of discovery to enhance or discard. I stop when I feel it is right (sometimes way too late.) I paint in acrylic on thin plywood and enhance many pieces with charcoal.  I hope you like them."

Coordinator for exhibit:
Jo Williams at [email protected]
The PointBank Black Box Theater Exhibition is co-sponsored by Denton Community Theater and VAST, and is located at 318 E. Hickory. For information on DCT, call 940.382.1915.
Hours: Monday & Wednesday, 1:00 - 4:00 pm
Friday 10:30 am - 1:30 pm.   Art may also be viewed during any of the performances at the Black Box.

"Through the Ages"  exhibition at the Denton Senior Center
Carol Stoecker will be exhibiting her work through June.

You can see some of her work at Blue Goose Cantina, Aw Shucks, Grapes To Wine (Bartonville). Carol has also painted murals in many DFW Grand model homes over the years.

Make sure to look closely at the Neon paintings! Some have messages hidden in them. The office will have a flashlight to help you locate special messages.

Carol's FUR BABY collection has been a big hit. She makes sure to get all the markings in the right place and capture their personality in their eyes! Contact Carol if you would like a special painting of YOUR fur baby! [email protected]

Coordinator for exhibit: Isabel Cano, [email protected].

509 N. Bell Ave., Denton, TX

"Stoked About Denton" Exhibition is a new Revolving Exhibit in Denton.  It is located walking distance from the Patterson-Appleton Center at 608 E. Hickory St., Suite 128.
VAST artists Mary Simon and Carole Petulla will be exhibiting through June.

Mary Simon: "We recently returned to Texas, after living three years overseas; this collection reflects the influences of our travels in and around our home in Athens, Greece.  My artwork has always mirrored my life in its fluid nature.  One thing leads to another, building on previous skills and understanding to continually learn and grow.  Inspiration was everywhere and it allowed me to explore and experiment with various mediums on a wide variety of subject matter."

Abstract artist Carole  Petulla began painting as a hobby, incorporating her recycling and reuse lifestyle. This former finance manager is mostly self-taught and paints in oil, inks and acrylics. Influenced by movement, color and her joy of life, she takes inspiration from her imagination influenced by God's creations all around her. Texture rules, touch it - but be gentle!

Carol Stoecker is the coordinator for this exhibition. If you are interested in showing, please contact her at [email protected].
