Feast of Christ the King
& New Liturgical Year
Jesus Christ, King of Kings, Lord of Lords.

This solemnity, commonly referred to as the Feast of Christ the King, is a relatively new liturgical observance in the Catholic tradition, established in 1925 by Pope Pius XI. Its institution by the Holy Father was partly in response to the rise of Fascism on the European continent, but also as a means of reminding the faithful that, despite the ebb and flow of political stability on earth, and the inevitable corruption of authority based on a fallen humanity, Christ himself has been given all authority in heaven and on earth by God the Father (Matthew 28:18). In the end, Christ will reign triumphant, and will establish an eternal order of justice and peace for his saints.
In his encyclical establishing the feast, Quas primas, the Holy Father addressed the lay faithful of the Church with these words:
“If to Christ our Lord is given all power in heaven and on earth; if all persons, purchased by his precious blood, are by a new right subjected to his dominion; if this power embraces all men and women, it must be clear that not one of our faculties is exempt from his empire. He must reign in our minds, which should assent with perfect submission and firm belief to revealed truths and to the doctrines of Christ. He must reign in our wills, which should obey the laws and precepts of God. He must reign in our hearts, which should spurn natural desires and love God above all things, and cleave to him alone. He must reign in our bodies and in our members, which should serve as instruments for the interior sanctification of our souls, or to use the words of the Apostle Paul, as instruments of justice unto God.”
Simply put, there is not one aspect of our very being that should not be submitted to the reign of our High Priest and King, the Lord Jesus Christ. May Christ reign in our minds, hearts, and wills as we await the coming of his Kingdom!

Make Room for Jesus this Advent Season
Happy New Liturgical Year! While the Feast of Christ the King marks the end of the liturgical year, Advent marks the beginning of the liturgical year. This year Advent begins on Sunday, November 29th.
Advent is a time of expectant waiting and preparation for both the celebration of the Nativity of Christ at Christmas and the return of Christ at the Second Coming.
- What does your family need to do to truly prepare for Christ's coming?
- How can you truly make room for Christ in your life?
The Archdiocese of KCK's very own Fr. Dan Weger wants to help your family journey through Advent this year and answer these very questions.
