Title of Presentation : The Ways Art Changed My Life
The guest for the next VAST Meeting, on Thursday, March 2nd is Mike Moffatt and Art-Hunger. Mike works at Asel Art Supply in Fort Worth and is a member of Art-Hunger. Mike and additional
members of the group will appear for a discussion about their goals and share the work of their passion.
Summary: I'm taking this opportunity to engage with other DFW artists, on the importance of a strong "Do It Yourself" art movement in your city. This talk will reflect on the potential of just a few friends deciding to start up an art group. Then give out insights on how they can start their own groups using partnerships with local schools and businesses. The idea is to provide stories from failures to successful events that reinforce why local art groups are so significant.
Art-Hunger is a Fort Worth/Dallas Texas art organization formed for both emerging and established artists
who have the desire to show their artwork, sell, socialize, learn, share, network, practice their skills and gain more exposure. In the summer of 2012, they hosted more than a dozen art shows and fund raisers.
Art Hunger welcomes all painters, sculptors, jewelers, book makers, ceramicists, glass blowers, welders, shirt and textile artists, graphic artists, illustrators and more to join in! Their goal is to continue creating new events and more ways to help bring the local art community together.
Mike's Artist Statement:
"Always looking to the future in whatever I do, while keeping the mind's eye on the past. Having respect for the long history of the arts is so important to me. Using skills I learned in school and out of the classroom, I have grown into a well-rounded painter and designer. Instead of the normal POP Art that is so overly done in this decade, I pick out scenes that touch the emotions in the true fans. This puts me closer to my audience and that loyalty is hard to come by in the art world.
The meeting is from 7-9pm and located at Patterson-Appleton Arts Center, 400 East Hickory Street, Denton. Fees for guests are $3.

This workshop will focus on the use of watercolor to paint exciting impressionistic paintings. You paint from photographs and will explore the use of light and shadow to create interesting compositions and achieve dynamic results. We will examine the fundamentals of watercolor painting to assure that all students are familiar with the techniques. Daily discussions and application of the principles and elements of design will be woven into your painting experience. Each day you will engage in exercises that will solidify the content that you are working on and spend time viewing other artists work. We will discuss the methods and the impact that these artists achieve using their techniques. Michael will demonstrate his approach to creating landscapes and cityscapes and show you several high speed demonstrations. You will have ample time to successfully complete your own paintings.
Michael welcomes novice and advanced students and tailors the experience to individual needs.
Cost: VAST Members: $195; Non-Members $230
Where: Patterson Appleton Arts Center, Denton (corner of Hickory and Bell)
Daily Time: 9:30 - 4:00, with a one hour lunch break; 9:30 - 2:00 on the last day.

If a participant must cancel, the VAST workshop coordinator will first attempt to fill the open spot from the official VAST waiting list. If there is no waiting list, the canceling participant is free to attempt to fill the spot on his/her own. No refunds will be made a month or less prior to the class.

If there are not enough participants to cover workshop costs, or if VAST must cancel for any other reason, participants will be notified by workshop coordinator and will promptly receive a full refund, including deposit.

An Exhibition of Watermedia
A reception will be held on March 25 at 5:00 pm until 6:30 pm. The public is invited.
On exhibit now, at the PointBank Black Box Theater, is an exhibition of watercolor and mixed media paintings by the students of Jo Williams. Artists exhibiting are Connie Hamill, Carolyn Johnson, Kimberly Karl, Barbara Lindley, Claudia Lynch, Clint Lynch, Mary Maher, Buster Maloney, Frances May, Diana McGimpsey, Bonnie Merritt, and Susan Vaughan. All exhibitors are members of the Visual Arts Society of Texas (VAST).
This exhibition will feature a variety of techniques including direct painting with transparent watercolor and experimental painting creating an abstract underpainting with splattering various dry pigments including instant coffee and instant tea. Subjects include florals - sunflowers, poinsettias, and white flowers as a study in painting white, and various birds and animals.
Williams has been painting and teaching in watercolor for over thirty years. Local classes are held at the Patterson-Appleton Art Center. Williams also teaches in various locations including in France for Artistic Gourmet Adventures. She will be teaching in Brittany in June, in Fredericksburg in April, and in Santa Fe in September.

Tom Judd will be

Denton, TX photographer, Thomas Judd, has been making photographs for over 35 years.
Judd earned a B.A. degree in Cinema and Photography from Southern Illinois University in 1980 and has made a career as a working photographer ever since. Experienced in many areas of commercial photography, as well as having taught beginning photography mini-courses at the University of North Texas, Judd has always kept a place in his life for making photographs that are purely for artistic enjoyment. His fine art photographs are widely exhibited, have won numerous awards, and are held in private collections throughout the United States.

David Blow: I am photographer/printmaker and Professor Emeritus of Art at the University of North Texas. I have been engaged as a
printmaker for forty five years and
exhibited my work in numerous national and international exhibitions including 2014 "All Creatures of our God and King" a one person exhibition at Lovers Lane UMC in Dallas,
Texas. In 2013, I had a "Retrospective Exhibition" at the University of North Texas on the Square in Denton.

Susan K. Boyle has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Arizona State University. After graduation she worked as a commercial artist for several years in Kansas City and in New York City. After changing careers Boyle continued studying art while traveling worldwide. Susan says, "Art is my primary creative outlet, so drawing and painting people has always seemed particularly compelling to me."
Boyle has been exhibiting publicly for over seventeen years. Her work may be seen in private collections across America.
About this Art Series:
This series of ten paintings started with models in the studio. Working from life, Susan K Boyle created sensitive line drawings that she enlarged and transferred to canvas. Boyle's goal was to capture the mood and spirit of the individual with a minimum of lines, marks, and colors. Using simplified forms, and limited colors she created this series of thoughtful figurative work of art. Website: susanboyle.com.

Born in Houston in 1966,
Deanna Wood
spent most of her childhood moving around the country with her family, returning to Texas in 1982.
She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Arts in graphic design, both from Texas Woman's University. She worked as a graphic designer in a corporate environment for 14 years. She decided to leave the corporate world behind to pursue a career in fine art, receiving a Master of Fine Arts in painting from Texas Woman's University in 2004. She lives in Denton, Texas and teaches art at Texas Woman's University and encaustic workshops at her studio and The Encaustic Center.

This exhibition will be the most comprehensive presentation ever dedicated to the artist's drawings and the first major monographic exhibition organized on the artist in the United States in the last 25 years.
Forty-seven of Ribera's drawings (nearly a third of the artist's surviving output), 12 prints, 11 paintings, and one relief sculpture will be on display, demonstrating the technical skill and extraordinary originality of this Golden Age master. Co-organized with the Museo Nacional del Prado, the exhibition marks the publication of the first catalogue raisonné of the artist's drawings, published jointly by the Meadows Museum, the Museo Nacional del Prado, and Fundación Focus. The Meadows Museum is the only U.S. venue for this exhibition.

ABOUT THE COMPETITION:
The Center for Contemporary Printmaking is delighted to announce the 11th Biennial International Miniature Print Competition and Exhibition. This juried competition and exhibition, limited to works that are no more than four square inches (25.8 square cm), encourages artists to explore the miniature print format and provides them with an opportunity for exhibition. It is also an opportunity for artists and the public to view the current concerns of printmakers from around the world. Since its inception in 1997, the competition has attracted entries by more than 1500 artists from around the world and across the U.S.A.
The International Miniature Print Competition is held every other year, alternating with CCP's other biennial, FootPrint International (for prints measuring 12 x 12 in. exactly).

Biennial: Origins in Geometry is a juried competition to recognize excellence in emerging visual artists deriving inspiration from geometric abstraction.
Artists who are selected as finalists will be featured in an exhibit at the Museum July 28 through October 22, included in a catalog with other finalists, receive exposure on the museum website, and have the opportunity to win cash awards for their exemplary work.
The Museum concentrates on modern and contemporary geometric, constructivist and kinetic art work. It is also the first museum with a concentration on MADI art, which is always non-representational, hard-edged, and comes out of the frame.

VAST Artist Day Out is a day where members may come paint at the Arts Center from 9:00am - 3pm, approximately two mornings a month. There is no instructor, it is not a workshop...just an art gathering.
You may paint, sketch, quilt or what ever creative endeavor you desire in the fellowship with your artist friends. Lunch and fellowship are the best parts!

These are the dates (usually fourth Thursday) for the monthly drawing session with a live model. This two hour open studio at the Arts Center will have no instructor. The group is available to VAST members only.
Each meeting will have both short and long poses. The model will be clothed. Participants will share the cost of the model. All participants will be responsible for putting the room back in order.
There will be no meetings in the summer: June, July, and August.
Location: The craft room at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center, 400 East Hickory Street.
