September Pastor's Message

The opportunities that we have in this life may not appear to be limitless, and we can feel trapped in a mundane life, but our lives can be well beyond what we imagine when we follow God’s purpose and callings. You and I can be used in amazing ways and cause a ripple effect upon others and even upon the whole world. God can use our small efforts to work towards His perfect will and His eternal Kingdom when we say “Yes” to Him.

One of the items we place in the beginning of every worship service is a line called, “Opportunities.” We usually list them on the back of the bulletin as well as announce something about them every Lord’s Day. As you read the newsletter, you will also see weekly opportunities available at CPC. Opportunities in God’s service and in His church are among the greatest privileges we have to participate in His Kingdom on earth.

Please avail yourself and your family of as many opportunities that you feel God is calling you to do. The purpose God graciously grants us during our short lifetimes is not to be hindered by things that so easily tempt and entangle us. Once we are called home to be with God, the opportunities that we had on this earth, cease. I don’t want to find out in heaven that I missed much of what God had for me because I chose something lesser for my life on a daily basis. As Hebrews 12:1 reminds us, “Therefore since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.”

I hope to see you in the house of the Lord this Sunday!

The Better Together
Ladies Bible Study Group

The Better Together Ladies Bible study will begin a study about Isaiah on Tuesday, September 27th. This is a 7-week study by Melissa Spoelstra where we will be encouraged to let go of striving and learn to trust God. From Isaiah's challenges to the nation of Israel and his prophecies of the Messiah, we will see that we can trust God more than our own human effort or the counterfeits the world suggests. Come join us for fellowship and God’s holy Word. Friends and neighbors are welcome!!

Join us on Tuesdays,
at 10:00 AM in the Family Life Center

Men's Bible Study
Wednesday's 7:30 AM (FLC)
(Coffee, Breakfast & Fellowship Included!)

This group is studying: GALATIONS FOR YOU

The Men’s Bible Study is now studying “Galatians For You”, written by Dr. Timothy Keller, a popular author of religious study books. This book opens up the book of Galatians for you to get to grips with the meaning and showing how it transforms our hearts and lives today. Galatians is all about the Gospel - the Gospel all of us need throughout our lives. It’s dynamite, and I pray that its powerful message explodes in your heart as you read this book. We would like for you to join us for this study. We meet each Wednesday at 7:30 AM for Bible study, fellowship, breakfast, and coffee. If you have any questions call Elton Waldrop at 843-460-0088.

THE FLOWER COMMITTEE

Would you like a special flower arrangement to honor or remember a certain someone near and dear to you, or extend a birthday blessing or an anniversary celebration?
The Sunday morning worship service flower arrangements are created by a team of people that enjoy taking the beauty of flowers and arranging them to honor and glorify God.
Email, sign-up in the side entrance hallway, or call the church office to choose the Sunday that you would like to give towards this ministry. Your special arrangement will be announced in that Sunday's bulletin.
Call 843-437-8219 or email: admin@charlestonpc.org.

The budgeting process for 2023 has begun. Members are encouraged to contact the Ministry Chairs prior to the October 9th Session Meeting should you wish to make recommendations on how funds should be budgeted in any given ministry.

UPDATE
For those who have been praying for us and supporting our family here in Costa Rica we want to thank you for your ongoing support. We always pray that God will bless each and everyone of you in every way possible…

We did an outreach event at Victor’s & Melba’s place called “Casa De Pan” where we were able to give the children new bedding, pillows, hygiene supplies, food, cleaning supplies, and a meal for that day. Victor & Melba are Christians who bring in, adopt, and care for children, many of which have been abused or neglected by their parents. Some were even babies that were discarded at Victor and Melba’s door. Victor & Melba make a point to teach all the kids about Jesus and His word. Normally there are around 40 kids under their care at any given time. Please pray for Victor, Melba, and these kids under their care that have come from broken and dysfunctional families.

La Romeria or the Pilgrimage in Costa Rica is clearly the largest event countrywide that happens every August 2. It is a religious pilgrimage where people walk by foot from all over Costa Rica showing their devotion to Mary while praying for miracles as they head to the Catholic Basilica in Cartago. When they arrive at the Basilica, they then crawl on their hands and knees from the outer courtyard and down the inner isles of the sanctuary often bloodying their knees in honor of Mary.
The Pilgrimage is a sad time for us as Christians who have to witness this event every year. During this time, I was able to do a bible study on this subject to show people that this is not right according to scriptures. The bible study was based on 1Corinthian 10:1-22. Let's look at a couple of the verses in this text: 1Corinthians 10:20-21 “But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have communion with demons. 21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of demons: ye cannot partake of the table of the Lord, and of the table of demons.”
These pilgrims who are walking to honor & please Mary are in essence doing a sacrifice to Mary. Their sacrifice to Mary is done to please her and possibly get something from her like a miracle. This is what the bible calls idolatry and what these Catholic pilgrims are really doing is drinking from the cup of demons…
Off and on, I have been having a bible study at Marvin & Heydi’s house sharing the word of God with this family. We have had a good time getting to know one another as we delve into the bible and its truths. Please pray for this family that if it’s God’s will we will continue to meet together for bible studies.
On this day I was evangelizing and getting to know my friend Juan better. He didn’t have a bible so thanks to a church in Pickens, SC I was able to give Juan a bible so that he can get to know the Lord better.
If you or a friend are interested in getting some Spanish bibles together to send to me here in Costa Rica then you can contact me at my email: jacobfolk40@gmail.com
We are always in need of bibles to give to those who don’t have one.
In a poor village in Cartago called Los Dikes, I have been reaching out to and getting to know Nubia & Daniel along with other members of her family. Nubia has a small section as you come in her front door where she sells fruits & vegetables. I have been sharing the word of the Lord with them and trying to answer any and all of their questions about the bible. Please pray for Nubia & Daniel along with her family that they will desire to study and learn more about Jesus and His word.

Miguel Angel received Christ as his Lord and Savior. I have been talking with Miguel off and on throughout the years as I have been working in this village. On this day, he wanted to be sure of his salvation and prayed to receive Jesus the one-and-only Messiah into his heart by faith. I gave him a bible as you can see in the photo and we have made plans to do a bible study at his house. Please pray for Miguel Angel as he begins to walk with the Lord on the narrow path.
Some of you remember that I used to work with a young guy named Oscar. Oscar is Costarican and has always desired to be a foreign missionary. A few weeks ago, we were talking and I encouraged him to start a bible study so that he can improve his abilities to both communicate and give bible studies. He invited a guy named Randal and on this day we were all able to be there and participate in this awesome moment. Oscar did a great job teaching but he needs your help so please remember him in your prayers.

YOUNG LIFE OF
WEST ASHLEY IS BACK AT CPC
Each Monday evening starting September 26 in the Family Life Center @ 6:00
West Ashley YoungLife

Their Mission:
Introducing adolescents to Jesus Christ and helping them grow in their faith.
Working with the local church is important to Young Life:
Although congregations can minister in ways we can’t, Young Life has inroads in communities with kids who are disinterested in church. However, as Young Life staff and leaders care for these kids, we try to help them become lifelong followers of Jesus Christ who will one day be active in the life of a local church.
