Despite the temporary suspension of our in-person programs, Mining Matters has been working vigorously to adapt our approach to program delivery. We are continuing to build mineral literacy through the delivery of online programs, new activities and partnerships.
Summer offers a great time to continue learning together. To help parents, teachers and students transition to at-home learning, we have developed over 25 DIY activities that you can do from the safety of your home! Put on your hard hat and dig into a mine load of fun as you learn about geology, engineering, mining and sustainability. New activities are posted on social media every Tuesday and Thursday.
Throughout the spring, Virtual Mining Week celebrations took place across the country. Mining Matters partnered with Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut to contribute activities for young people to celebrate mining week from home. In theme with online learning, our School Programs Coordinators spent the last couple of weeks of the school year delivering synchronous learning workshops to classes to help support teachers delivering science and social studies curriculum topics related to rocks, minerals and mining.
We joined
Youth Science Canada
for their virtual STEM fair that started on May 20 and will run through the fall.
The Mining Matters exhibit contains links to online games and DIY activities on our website.
We recently partnered with
Let's Talk Science to contribute a hands-on learning activity to their Horizon Project, which will provide up to 75,000 youth ages 9 to 11 in low socio-economic communities across Canada with a package of 'unplugged' STEM learning resources.
This summer, we are excited to continue our collaboration with the
Outland Youth Employment Program (OYEP) and have adapted in-person program delivery by providing their staff with educational resources and training to deliver Mining Matters activities for their participants. OYEP has provided hundreds of Indigenous youth with income and learning opportunities over the past two decades.
