Greetings families,
I hope this email finds you well and rested from last week’s break. As we begin the 4th quarter, we would like to let you know about the upcoming expectations for standardized testing for all 3rd-5th grade students. All students are required to participate in state testing. You will see in a section below the dates for our upcoming AZM2 and AzSci tests. Additionally, a direct email was sent to Distance Learning families, which has been be seen here.
These tests are a primary means by which the state of Arizona measures academic progress within all schools. We, as a publicly funded academy, are expected to cultivate certain math, reading, and writing skills. The standardized assessments are a snapshot on how students are progressing within each of these skills. We do not teach to the test at our academy, but rather, let our mission guide every choice we make within our walls. At Great Hearts, we know our mission to cultivate the hearts and minds of students in the pursuit of Truth, Goodness, and Beauty cannot be reduced to any assessment or a simple quantity. We aim for the transformation of the heart, something which is intangible and immeasurable. Yet, our rigorous, structured curriculum, our dedicated teachers, and our intervention programs are designed to cultivate reading fluency, a thoughtful reflection of literature, mathematical problem solving skills, and the clear written expression of ideas. We see these tests as one of a number of ways we can measure our progress in these areas. They can help us know where we can continue to grow in executing these aspects of our mission.
In order to best prepare for the exams, we ask that you take note of the dates below and plan ahead. If a student leaves the testing environment, they cannot continue their exam and it will be submitted as is. Please do not schedule appointments for these dates or pull your children out early.
We recommend that your scholars get a good night’s sleep the day before and a nutritious breakfast in the morning. Please have students bring the following a healthy snack and water bottle for the break during testing. Additionally, all students should bring a set of headphones, as certain parts of the test require audio. These must not be Bluetooth headphones, but be able to connect via an auxiliary cord.
We thank you for your time and support. As always, if you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I wish you all a wonderful 4th quarter ahead!
With Gratitude,
Stephen Philabaum

You will complete the re-enrollment packet online through the Great Hearts Parent Portal. Current 5th grade students should have already submitted their paperwork to Trivium Prep.
Math Textbook Return
If you still have a copy of the hardbound math books that were distributed earlier this year, please return these to your child’s homeroom teacher. Thank you for your support!

Athenian Field Day is coming April 1!
As we move forward with our last quarter of the school year we approach a wonderful community event--Athenian Field Day! The event will take place on the half day, Thursday, April 1. This is a day where classes will compete against or with each other to test their strength, skill, and also to have plenty of fun. All activities will follow our current on-campus health and safety guidelines for social distancing. We look forward to celebrating together in the Athenian tradition on this day.
We are looking for snack donations and volunteers* to help make the day a great success. Please check out the sign-ups below (*Volunteers MUST have Raptor clearance).
Before the big day there are a few suggestions and expectations that need to be addressed to ensure that we are able to maintain our order and excellence on this action-packed half-day;
Field Day dress-code and expectations. Please read thoroughly.
- Scholars will be outside for an extended period of time, so please apply sunblock before school to make sure the day can run smoothly and efficiently.
-
They will be active most of the day so please ensure that your scholar(s) have a personal water bottle with them that day.
- As far as dress code, we will follow the guidelines as laid out in the parent handbook. A copy is below for your convenience.
Athletic Practice and Outdoor Field Day Dress Code
Just as Archway provides guidelines for dress code in the classroom, it is important to project the image of professionalism in our athletic attire as well.
All shirts worn for athletic practices and field day should be modest, loose fitting, in good repair (no holes, torn sleeves, etc.), should be worn either tucked in or well over the waist of the pants/shorts if not tucked in. No midriffs may be shown. T‐shirts are preferred—no tank tops, camisoles, or sports bras may be worn as outer garments. Sleeveless shirts may be worn if modest.
Shorts should be modest, in good repair (no holes, torn sleeves, etc.) Shorts should be worn at the waist and should be no shorter than mid‐thigh and no‐longer than just below the knee. No short‐shorts or long baggy shorts may be worn. No boxers or undergarments may be visible.
Attire should be free of logos and messages, with the following exceptions: sports team logos (e.g., Diamondbacks, Notre Dame), and apparel brand names (e.g., Adidas, Abercrombie) are acceptable, provided they do not make inappropriate allusions (as do some skateboarding/ snowboarding brands). These guidelines also apply to sweatshirts and jackets that students may wear. Footwear should be athletic in nature: no sandals, open‐toed, or platform shoes. Hats and sunscreen may be appropriate, if the students will be in the sun. Hat styles should follow the same guidelines as above.
