Memorial Service for Sergeant Armando Meneses
March 13: Family, friends and LASD partners of Sergeant Armando Meneses (EOW: 2/16/21) gathered last Saturday for a memorial service in Downey. The devoted husband, father and 24-year LASD veteran also served his nation in the U.S. Army and was deployed for Operation Desert Storm. President Tab Rhodes and Executive Director Wayne had the honor and privilege of attending this service on behalf of PPOA. This association is forever grateful for Sergeant Meneses' service and sacrifice.

LA County Fed 'House of Labor' Meeting
March 15: PPOA representatives joined fellow LA County Federation of Labor members for the monthly "House of Labor" teleconference. Participants from PPOA included President Tab Rhodes, Executive Board Member Robert Maus and Executive Director Wayne Quint Jr. 

The County Fed is comprised of more than 300 unions and labor organizations, representing more than 800,000 members.
PPOA/Custody Labor Management Committee Meeting
March 16: PPOA participated in the monthly Custody Labor Management Committee (LMC) teleconference with Employee Relations, Assistant Sheriff Chase and department representatives to discuss issues impacting members workincustody. Topics of discussion at this meetinincluded safety equipment for Custody Assistants, Sergeant impairment updates, an update on the proposal to close MCJ, budget issues and the California Department of Justice civil rights investigation. Meeting participants from PPOA included President Rhodes, Executive Board Member Tony Coleman and Executive Director Quint.
PPOA/Labor Management Committee Meeting
March 16: PPOA took part in a Labor Management Committee teleconference with Assistant Sheriff Limon and representatives from Personnel Administration Bureau, Financial Programs Bureau, Special Operations Division and Employee Relations. Topics of discussion included COVID-19 updates, budget concerns and Measure J financial update, the potential creation of a promotional process working group, and other policy issues. Meeting participants from PPOA included President Rhodes and Executive Director Quint. While discussing COVID-19, PPOA expressed gratitude for those on the department who have been instrumental in coordinating vaccinations of LASD personnel over the last few weeks. President Rhodes witnessed firsthand the diligent work of the vaccination team at Century Station (photo below) this week while receiving his dose and encourages all PPOA members to opt for the vaccine as soon as possible in order to help put this pandemic behind us.
Meeting with PPOA Legal Counsel
March 16: PPOA representatives hosted a teleconference with our union attorneys Jim Cunningham and Christopher Morse to discuss updates and legal strategies regarding the SEB SGT/LT explosive "breacher" pay bonus, related ALADS litigation and effects on PPOA members.
Delivering Support to Members
March 16: In order to help members and their coworkers remain healthy and safe, PPOA staff members delivered more than 2,000 bottles of hand sanitizer to 15 units throughout the county this week, including:

Meeting to Discuss PPOA.COM Updates and Secure Access
March 17: PPOA board and staff representatives took part in a teleconference on Wednesday morning to discuss ongoing improvements to the PPOA.COM website, including a growing number of secure "members-only" pages.
Sheriff Discusses Current Events
March 17: Sheriff Alex Villanueva hosted a Facebook live stream on Wednesday to discuss current events, including CCWs, COVID-19 vaccinations, recruitment, MTA contract and more.

Coalition of County Unions Meeting
March 17: Executive Director Quint joined fellow representatives of the Coalition of County Unions (CCU) on Wednesday for their monthly meeting.
The main topic of discussion was the ongoing preparation for fringe benefits negotiations. The current 3-year fringe benefits contract expires on June 30, 2021 and the upcoming negotiations will impact all PPOA bargaining units. 

The CCU collectively represents more than 30,000 union members employed by the County of Los Angeles and is their unified voice on County-wide matters such as health insurance, vacation pay, retirement, and other issues impacting County employees and their families. 

Memorial Service for Sergeant Jamie Arakawa
March 18: Family, friends and LASD partners of Sergeant Jamie Arakawa (EOW: 2/8/21) gathered for his memorial service at Christ Cathedral in Garden Grove. The 25-year department veteran also served this nation as a U.S. Marine Corps Reservist and Operation Desert Storm veteran. Sergeant Arakawa is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters.

President Rhodes, Executive Board Member Maus and Executive Director Quint had the honor and privilege of attending this service on behalf of PPOA. This association is forever grateful for Sergeant Arakawa's service and sacrifice.


PPOA Board Member on Intent to Promote List
March 18: Congratulations to the hard-working Lieutenants (soon-to-be-Captains) on the "Intent to Promote" list issued by the Sheriff's Department this week. We are especially proud of PPOA Board Member John Satterfield and look forward to seeing him flourish as a Captain. This movement among Department leaders is healthy and long-needed. Best of luck to all of you in your upcoming assignments.

College Scholarships Available at PPOA.COM
PPOA is proud to announce that 12 scholarships worth $13,500 total are available to help further the education of PPOA members and their sons and daughters. The deadline to apply is close of business (5:00 pm) on May 14, 2021. Since this program's inception nine years ago, PPOA has awarded approximately $100,000 in scholarships to members of the PPOA family.
