Luncheon Lecture: BAT 21
September 23
On April 2, 1972, a U.S. Air Force jet, call sign “Bat 21”, was shot down by a North Vietnamese surface-to-air missile behind enemy lines. The lone surviving crewmember, the navigator, ejected at 31,000 feet and was the subject of the largest and one of the most difficult rescue operations in Air Force history. A 1988 movie starring Gene Hackman and Danny Glover told parts of the secret rescue mission. John van Etten of Horton Bay didn’t need to see the movie. He was one of the rescue pilots portrayed in the film and has written his own book about the experience. John will provide his eyewitness account of the harrowing and costly rescue. Lunch served at 11:30 am, lecture begins at noon. Cancellations are non-refundable within 24 hours of this event.

Pet Of The Week - Roxanne!
Hey guys, I’m Roxanne and I'm a quiet girl, but I still get random spurts of energy. I came to the shelter with my sister after spending most of my early days outdoors. My sister and I really didn’t get along very well, so I tend to react negatively when around other dogs. One of my favorite things to do is play! Another thing I enjoy very much is cuddling. I love my humans, but cats not so much. I do pretty well with children, but older kids may be a better fit for me until I get adjusted. I love to go for walks and while I get to go on many here at the shelter, I would love to have my very own human to walk with me. Please think about letting me in to your home and heart, I promise I won’t disappoint!

Sail Charlevoix Fundraiser and Silent Auction
Sail Charlevoix These 15 beautiful Sea Bags will be available in an upcoming online silent auction. The online auction will go live in early October.
We have taken our sail school’s old sails and turned them into merchandise from Sea Bags, Charlevoix. The bags are various sizes - Beverage Buckets, Beachcomber Buckets, Tool Bucket Bags, and medium and large Totes. The top-winning bid for each item will turn into a donation to our program that will help us purchase much needed items for the sail school.
This is a win/win situation for our sail school and for the environment. Since Fall 2021, we have recycled 46 old sails. That’s approximately 150 pounds of worn out sails that have been kept out of the landfill!
Sail Charlevoix is governed by Lake Charlevoix Mariners, Inc. It is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable, educational organization committed to supporting the development of and access to sailing opportunities for our Lake Charlevoix community.
For more information on the silent auction send an email to info@sailcharlevoix.org, and we will put you in our email list for notifications.

NORTH CENTRAL MICHIGAN COLLEGE SEEKS COMMUNITY INPUT ON TWO BALLOT PROPOSALS
Proposals call for annexing Charlevoix County into the college’s service area
North Central Michigan College is evaluating the feasibility of placing two proposals on the May 2023 ballot. The proposals call for annexing Charlevoix County into North Central’s service area.
North Central Michigan College is inviting all Charlevoix County residents to view a short video and complete a brief survey regarding the annexation proposals. Confidential responses to the survey, which was developed by an independent, Michigan-based survey research firm, will provide valuable information that will help North Central determine whether the two annexation proposals should be placed on the May 2023 ballot.
The video and survey link are open now and will be available 24 hours every day until 11:59 p.m. on Friday, October 7. College officials request that stakeholders view the video and complete the survey during that period.
To view the video and access the survey, visit HERE. Individuals with questions should contact North Central Michigan College President David Roland Finley by phone (231-348-6601) or email (president@ncmich.edu).
