See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
Isaiah 43:19
It is said that nobody likes change. We are much more comfortable when we know what to expect. It makes us feel safe. That is one of the reasons why young children thrive when they have a routine.
I am certainly one who likes things a certain way, especially in my home - as my husband Tony could surely tell you(!) I have come to learn that I function much better when there is order, and everything is in its place.
So is it wrong to want things a certain way? I would say this is only wrong, if it is going against God and what He is trying to accomplish. We can't always have it our way, right? Where we humans are happy for things to just keep chugging along the same way they always have, God is always doing something new. He will take and use anything for His good purposes.
That means that even in changing circumstances we can look to what new thing God is trying to do. Perhaps it is something in us He wants to change, perhaps we are to be inspired or convicted. I don't always know. But, I know I can trust Him.
I am sure we can all agree that some change is good, and some change not so good. For instance, marriages bring good changes. So too the birth of a baby. Death of a loved one or being imprisoned, not so much. And yet, I think of someone like Chuck Colson of Watergate fame, who went to prison and later created Prison Fellowship, an amazing ministry, now going into its 45th year. He was quoted as saying "God used my greatest defeat for His glory!" I don't think anyone saw that one coming!
So what is God doing new at All Saints? Well, for one thing, we are about to lose our beloved Rector Ed and his wife Patty as they move to North Carolina. Change we didn't want, but heading our way nevertheless. Fear not - God is ALWAYS doing something new! God has always provided for All Saints, and He always will.
God bless you!
