MFGA eBulletin - September 2022

From the Desk of the Executive Director
I’m not sure what it is about the fall season, but as we wave goodbye to the late-breaking, fast-passing summer of 2022 that we just finished, Fall 2022 seems very ready to rock and roll as a time period of constant hubbub and actions.

Of course, the annual fall harvest is such a vital time period, it moves to the front burner for everyone and - rightfully so - brings extra attention and well-deserved emphasis. From all of us at MFGA, we wish you well on your harvest fronts and we especially wish you warm, sunny October days as you progress from crop to crop and field to field. We are pulling for all.

Just before August ended, MFGA pitched in with our Prairie Watershed Climate Program (PWCP) lead Manitoba Association of Watersheds (MAW) and our project partners at Saskatchewan Association of Watersheds (SAW) to detail progress and next steps within the AAFC’s On Farm Climate Action Fund that supports the entire PWCP. The webinar is now posted on MAW’s YouTube channel and is linked below. It also has been updated in key areas that came forward after the webinar was held. I strongly encourage all to give it a view. I thought our project managers/moderators: Dan Cox (MAW) and Lynne Roszell (SAW) were exemplary in fielding questions and providing information.

Finally, we are absolutely determined to pull off our fifth-ever MFGA Regenerative Agriculture Conference with great success and gusto this November 14-15, 2022 in Brandon. Plans are looking really good and getting better every day and we will be accelerating the conference profile and promotions more front and center as we move closer to the event. Please do take full advantage of the early bird registration fee on October 1. It’s going to be a blast!

Muchos Grasses,
Duncan Morrison, MFGA Executive Director

September Hay Situation & Price Update
Haying conditions have been a challenge for many this growing season. Frequent rains have made a first cut difficult. As we move into the first days of fall there have been more opportunities to take subsequent cuts without rain affecting the quality. Prices for September look to be trending down (slightly). We are also seeing more ads indicating whether or not the crop has been rained on and this is being reflected in some of the prices. Read on...
