While few positives can be contributed to COVID-19, one shimmer of a silver lining is the increased use of online platforms for gathering. Thanks to Alison Busch via Facebook, I learned of the Amplify Team’s book club virtual reading of Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson.
My husband, two daughters, and I were members of DUMC before moving to Pinehurst, North Carolina, 12 years ago. While we found a church community here, I desperately miss Dilworth’s close-knit community and my Circle 29 friends. I miss Dilworth’s relentless pursuit of truth and justice through God’s word. I miss hashing out on difficult topics without fear of repercussion.
While Caste was not an easy read, the opportunity to explore prickly topics like race in an open environment as the Amplify Team’s book club was an easy choice. We tackled passages, debated theories, and lamented our personal inabilities to effect change. And I saw my sweet friends face to face. It was glorious.
