IMPORTANT SUMMER SESSION ANNOUNCEMENT
In light of the on-going unpredictability caused by COVID-19, OLLI will continue virtually this summer, under the header “OLLI Anywhere."

Stay tuned for what we hope to be good and exciting news about our plans for the fall.
OLLI is now accepting proposals for summer 2021 study groups!

Coordinators are the heart of this program, so thank you in advance to the members who will step forward to create wonderful study group experiences for our membership. We value the time and talents you bring to OLLI. Please know that we will give you the help and support you need to be successful!
 
The 4 week summer semester is from Tuesday, July 6 to Monday, August 2. Proposal deadline is Monday, April 5th
 
Online Form for Submitting Proposals. 
Submitting a proposal is quick and easy. Simply fill out the online form and click submit! Your proposal will immediately be submitted to the Study Group Committee for review and you will receive a copy of your proposal submission via email. 

NOTE: Prior to starting the form, gather all the information you will need as you will not be able to save the form and go back to it. For a list of information you will need to complete the form - CLICK HERE

When completing the study group description, if you receive a word count error but know your description is fewer than 200 words, email olli@northwestern.edu and we will assist you.

To submit a summer proposal, select the campus where you are usually affiliated.
The link will take you to the online proposal form.

Roving the Red Planet
Wednesday, March 24, Noon–1pm
Location: Online webinar via Zoom

There are currently 5 U.S. spacecraft either on or orbiting Mars right now. The Perseverance Rover landed February 18. What have we learned about the Red Planet with decades of robotic visitors? Plenty! Michelle Nichols, Director of Public Observing, The Adler Planetarium, will cover the past, present, and future of Martian exploration.

Michelle Nichols has worked at the Adler since June 1995. Ms. Nichols leads all of the Adler Planetarium's telescope, observatory, and public sky observing initiatives and events. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics and Astronomy from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Master of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction from National-Louis University.
Calling All Science Fans in Chicago and Evanston

If you are interested in any area of science, from Astronomy to Zoology, join us online to meet your friendly colleagues and share your ideas for future study groups. We welcome all topics in science, medicine, technology and health, inspired by your favorite books, documentaries/films, television or online series, and other resources.

How to Recognize Microaggressions and Recover Relationships When You’ve Made One
Thursday, March 25, Noon–1pm

For over 20 years, Rina Campbell, who is an Equity, Diversity & Inclusion specialist, has been facilitating courageous conversations on race. She uses her own experience of being raised an Asian American who presents white, and the expectations of being in “the model minority” to talk about inequities and help people navigate the complex waters of how to stand up to racism and discrimination. Rina’s motto is: By working through conflicts come our best opportunities for learning and growth.

With over 20 years experience in anti-bias education and training, Rina holds a B.A. from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and a Master's in Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Before founding Campbell Consulting, Rina was Associate Director of the Chicago-Midwest Region's Anti-Defamation League. The past three years, Rina has worked under the Chicago Consent Decree's team to provide Managing Implicit Bias for Law Enforcement training to over 11,000 officers in the metro-Chicago area.

The Black Lives Matter Movement and the Future of American Democracy

Our country is in a state of identity and cultural crisis. Unable to settle upon unifying principles, racial discrimination, white supremacy, domestic terrorism and State-sponsored attempts to suppress voters are facts of life. Yet the destination of America will be determined by how she includes and embraces all citizens in her democracy. Dr. Alvin B. Tillery, Director of the Center for the Study of Diversity and Democracy and Associate Professor of Political Science at Northwestern University, examines the contours of the #BlackLivesMatter movement with an eye toward gauging its effectiveness in promoting reforms that advance racial justice.

The Refugee Crisis in Syria and the Middle East

In recent years the global population of refugees has reached record highs, particularly in the Middle East. Who are these displaced people, where are they going, and why did they flee? Rana Khoury, Ph.D. candidate and lecturer in the Department of Political Science at Northwestern, considers the human tragedy of forced displacement, the international refugee regimes, and the organizations tasked with alleviating the suffering of the displaced.

President Biden has signed executive actions that are a bold commitment to climate solutions, land conservation, and clean water protections. Speaker Howard A. Learner is an experienced public interest environmental and energy litigation attorney serving as Executive Director of the Environmental Law & Policy Center — the Midwest's leading environmental legal advocacy and eco-business innovation organization.

Beware of Spam Emails!
Some OLLI members have recently received spam emails. These emails look like they relate to OLLI programs but are actually sent from hackers. Clicking on links within these emails may create vulnerability to your private information as well as that of OLLI and OLLI members.

With much of the world moving to an online format, hackers are more active than ever. As a result we all need to be more vigilant in our online activity.

OLLI Staff Hours
The OLLI staff continue to work remotely in an effort to combat the spread of COVID-19. While remote, we are still working hard to support you and the program. We are available Monday - Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm by email (olli@northwestern.edu) which we check regularly.
Northwestern Libraries
OLLI members can borrow materials from the Main Northwestern University library in Evanston but must select the Off-Campus Delivery option on the Borrowing Materials page linked below — no books can be picked up in person due to current COVID-19 restrictions.

Instructions:
  • Go to the Library Website
  • Click the Request function for a particular item
  • Click Pickup Location menu and select Personal Delivery, Home.
  • Enter your street address and zip code in the Notes field.
  • Click Send Request.

National Resource Center for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (NRC)
