Heart Intentions for a New Year
How We Live

Happy New Year to each of you and your family! May the new year be filled with abundant good health, peace, ease and joy for All. In yoga philosophy, the term "sankalpa" means to set intentions from one's heart and a solemn vow to manifest the heart intention. But the difference between traditional new year's resolutions and sankalpas is that when we create a sankalpa, we start from a place of remembering our divine wholeness, worthiness and goodness. We are not trying to eliminate our inadequacies or imperfections but rather embrace and live more from our highest Self. In other words, some of our shortcomings and suffering stem from not owning our divine wholeness. When we live from a heart and mind that embody our wholeness, more wholeness will manifest in how we live. May we resolve to set our intentions from a place of acknowledgment of our divine worth and fullness to manifest the yearnings of our hearts for ourselves, our families, communities and our world.

Setting heart intentions for what we want to create during this new year is valuable for each of us as we navigate life's journey. Another way we can think of heart intentions is "how" we live each day - this can be a valuable and healing practice for each of us and our world. As we continue to live through this exhausting pandemic, it is a thoughtful invitation to examine how do we live in the world each day. How are we showing up? What kind of energy and attitudes do we contribute to the world each day? In other words, how are we doing what we do?

Imagine if we each commit to offering to ourselves, our families and friends, our communities and our world as much Love, Kindness, Respect, Patience, Compassion, Forgiveness, Humility, Integrity and Generosity of Spirit as we can each day. Visualize what kind of a world we can create and healing we can manifest if we each commit to live from these higher vibrational qualities that live in each of us? All of these sacred qualities live in us, we may just have to shift our awareness to embody our wholeness and sacredness which will inspire us to live from these healing and divine qualities. May we remember that Love is the most infinite and powerful energy in the universe-it is synonymous with God-and within Love, all these other qualities reside. This is a courageous and inspirational sankalpa indeed and one that takes daily practice. But the more we humbly practice, the more we grow in awareness and the more skillful we become at living from these sacred qualities.

L.R. Knost reminds us “[l]ife is amazing. And then it's awful. And then it's amazing again. And in between the amazing and awful it's ordinary and mundane and routine. Breathe in the amazing, hold on through the awful, and relax and exhale during the ordinary. That's just living heartbreaking, soul-healing, amazing, awful, ordinary life. And it's breathtakingly beautiful.”

How do we live through adversity, heartache and this ongoing pandemic? If we do the best we can each day and honor that our capacity shifts and changes daily, we offer ourselves love, kindness and compassion; and in turn increase our capacity to offer these same qualities to others when they struggle. Adversity and heartache are challenging and overwhelming enough. How we choose to respond to them will either help us to be more resilient, accepting and peaceful or increase our pain and suffering. Each life experience is an opportunity for awakening, spiritual growth and evolution. What is the most loving, kind and peaceful way we can respond to our challenges and adversity? How can we respond so it does not increase our suffering? How will we choose as hardships arise? May we remember to keep coming back and embody Love, Kindness, Respect, Patience, Compassion, Forgiveness, Humility, Integrity and Generosity of Spirit as much as we can each day. May we remember the presence of the Sacred to always guide, protect and comfort us.

New Day's Lyric

May this be the day
We come together.
Mourning, we come to mend,
Withered, we come to weather,
Torn, we come to tend,
Battered, we come to better.
Tethered by this year of yearning,
We are learning
That though we weren't ready for this,
We have been readied by it.
We steadily vow that no matter
How we are weighed down,
We must always pave a way forward.
This hope is our door, our portal.
Even if we never get back to normal,
Someday we can venture beyond it,
To leave the known and take the first steps.
So let us not return to what was normal,
But reach toward what is next.
What was cursed, we will cure.
What was plagued, we will prove pure.
Where we tend to argue, we will try to agree,
Those fortunes we forswore, now the future we foresee,
Where we weren't aware, we're now awake;
Those moments we missed
Are now these moments we make,
The moments we meet,
And our hearts, once all together beaten,
Now all together beat.
Come, look up with kindness yet,
For even solace can be sourced from sorrow.
We remember, not just for the sake of yesterday,
But to take on tomorrow.
We heed this old spirit,
In a new day's lyric,
In our hearts, we hear it:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne.
Be bold, sang Time this year,
Be bold, sang Time,
For when you honor yesterday,
Tomorrow ye will find.
Know what we've fought
Need not be forgotten nor for none.
It defines us, binds us as one,
Come over, join this day just begun.
For wherever we come together,
We will forever overcome.

A Blessing for Presence

May you awaken to the mystery of being here And enter the quiet immensity of your own presence. May you have joy and peace in the temple of your senses. May you receive great encouragement when new frontiers beckon. May you respond to the call of your gift And find the courage to follow its path. May the flame of anger free you from falsity. May warmth of heart keep your presence aflame and anxiety never linger about you. May your outer dignity mirror an inner dignity of soul. May you take time to celebrate the quiet miracles that seek no attention. May you be consoled in the secret symmetry of your soul. May you experience each day as a sacred gift, Woven around the heart of wonder.
